Johnson was adjusting to his new KTM and to the slick cond itions everybody had to face in the first motes, but he managed a get secondand fourt h-p lace fini shes in the 12S Novice cc class , which was dominated by Jeremiah Moore, w ho won bo th 125c c Novice motos on his Honda. Moore also took the 12Scc Open class, followed by Austin's Robert Tiemann and the , ever-present Rob Arney. Ha rley Murphy got all the competition he cou ld handle fro m tz-year-oid Adam Mennenga, who had run at Lakeside only once before. Mu rphy's Yamaha wasrodd bike ou t" in a short field dominated by Kawasakis, but he and Menne nga p ut on quite a show. Mennenga too k the first mota after pressuring Murphy into falling twice, and it was obv ious that each rider had sections of the track where he was faster than the other. Murphy had both the intimidating large double jump and the shorter double w ired , showing his fam iliarity with th e track. Mennenga was strong from the first tum all the wa y to the high table jump, and Murphy fough t hard to £ ut dis tance between himself and Mennenga each lap before they hit that section. once fishtailing wild ly out of tum one but ho lding the bike under control. At the end of the second moto, Murphy was first, but only by a bike length. .
