Folks rode the se co nd half of his fir st loop with no goggles after a crash filled them with dirt and the Lundgr een family' s three racers all ran into trouble. Older brother Steve Lun dgree n kept p lugging his fue l filter; middle brother Mark kinked a cab le, which kept sticking hi s throttl e open, a n d y o u nge r brother J.~tf sucked a base gasket. Book's bid to stay ou t in front all the wa y wa s ov er when h e lost hi s rear brake pin and had to tackle th e tight turns with onl y a front brak e. For Abbott , th e 86-mile even t h ad turned into one crash after ano ther. "I had a really bad day. I crashed like six tim es," sa id Abbott . "I twisted 'my knee. on the first loop really bad and I didn 't w ant to put a ny we ig h t on it b ecau se it w a s we ak . I cra shed and crashed after that." About the only rider who see med to be having an y fun wa s Scot Harden , the only racer left in the Ov er-30 Pro 'd ivision. . "I th ough t it was awesom e. The ride, the way I felt tod ay, the weathe r - everything was just perfect :" said Harden . The need to stay on top of the course started to take a toll as the riders hit pit row halfway through their second and final lap of the figure eight. Man y of the riders had lost thei r early sty le and settled for a sack-of-p ota toes hunch over the handleb ars. . Book's proble m s g ave Hamel the number -one spo t in the physical stand ings to go w ith his time-adjus ted lead , but, try as he migh t, the Ka wasaki ace could not shake Zitterko p f and Da vis. When Ham el dashed out of the firs t half of the figure eight with just 27 miles - be tw een h im an d the checke red flag, Zitterko pf was two minutes behi nd hi m, seco nd in th e physica l standin gs, and Da vis, w ho was th ir d physica lly, was just 50 seconds behind h im on time . Des pite the closeness of the compet ition, Hamel pulled off the course to get a sp lash of gas, then hit the second half - of the figu re eight wide-open. "Abo u t the 20-mile ma rk (four miles into the second half of the figure eigh t) I saw Zitte rko pf behind me. I knew I had - tw o minutes on h im bu t then I looked back and I saw Davis right behind him. I s ai d , 'a h o h, I'd b ett er p ick up th e s peed : so I rea lly sta rte d hammer in g d own:' said Hamel. "I knew I'd bett er quit messin g around and ge t thi s thing to the finish, so I really got on the gas 9 and start ed push ing hard." The d isappoint ed racer w as sitting by the side of the trail when Zitte rkopf powere d past to take over the number two spot. At the end of 86 miles an d tw o-an dthree-q ua rter hours of raci ng, Hamel took th e checke red flag with a fourminute margin ove r second- placed Zitterko pf .
