tea m, and all I wanted to do was bea t him. That' s all past now ; We get along fine. I think he h andled me beating him all right. He had to have kn own that it wa s coming." . The co n tr as t b etw een th e tw o Young and Aaron - is quite noti ceable. While Aa ron is friend ly and lighthea rted, Young presents a harder, more business like appearance. "Ryan is pretty serious abo ut everything," sai d Aaron. "Everything about us is differen t - our riding s ty les, ou r att itu des and our goa ls. Ryan ten ds to take a lot of time in the sections, bala ncing and waiting for everythin g to be just perfect befo re he attacks an obstacle. I'm more likely to ride in, do a hu ge end o and gas it. I don't like to bala nce and all th at. Of course, if the section is su p er techni cal I have to, but I usually tend to crank through the sections. I think the spectators like that be tter an yway. "My riding sty le has always been like that from da y one . I haven' t really toned • it down, I've just go tten better so that I can get aw ay w ith rid in g like th at. I ne ve r wanted to beat Ryan by rid ing like him - all technical. I like my style. " Als o, my g oa l wa s to win th e National Ch ampionship. My goa l is not . to win it s ix times. Ryan is concerned wi th beating all these records and stuff. I'd rather look towards Europe and set bigger goals for myself." Another differen ce between Aaron and the form er champion is his will ingness to compete for his cou ntry. When the '94 World Championship Series visited Donner Ski Ran ch in June, Aaron was on hand to co m pete. You ng w as not. "I thought that was kind of uncool," la id Aaro n, r efe rr in g to You n g 's absence. " If there's going to be a World round in yo ur coun try, don't yo u th ink the co u n try' s b est rid er shou ld be on , hand? That's an oth er reason I wanted to beat him . Hi s main concern is always the National s. World ro u n d s a re n ' t. I figu re he d oesn' t w ant to go ou t and beat himself up if he d oesn't ha ve to . I'm the ty pe of guy who alw ays wants to im p ro ve. Now I d on ' t ev en look at sections and wonder how Ryan wou ld do th em - I look at them an d won der how [ordi (Tarres) would do them." So, with the National Championshi p und er his belt , does Aaron hope to contest the World Championship Series? . " It wo uld be nice, but it' s really, really hard to get enough support," Aaron said , "The companies who sponsor me right now don ' t w ant to s pe n d th eir money to send me overse as, where they won' t ge t an y publicity. Sure, I might be in every maga z ine in Europe, bu t I won't ge t any press here. In order t~ get help that's based in Europe, yo u have to at least be in the poi nts. The closest I've come to scoring a Worl d Champion ship points wa s a t Donn er, where I wa s 16th ." So for now, Aaron will focus on successfully defending his National Champion ship aboard his Cosmopoli tan Motors-sponsored Beta Zero. "Wh at I will do is try my hardest to win the Na tional Championship again, and hopefully, an opportunity will arise for m e to s pe n d so me m ore time in Europe," he said. "I'd sure like to give it a try - really give it a full-fled ged effort to make it in Europe. I thin k I could eleva te to tha t le vel. I d on' t know it for sure, but I' d su re try like hell. In th e mea ntime, I guess I' ll tr y my h and at orne ot he r th ings, now tha t I've won the' title . I' d lik e to sp en d some time ot ocrossing and riding hare scram bles. ou know - do a litt le of everything.
