two days' work in one day. Al (Luddington) does a great job, my mechanic, and Ray (Plumb), an d I get along great with Bobby . When you left th em yo u went to 500s. Is that still your goal? My only goal with th e 500 is, I think eve ry rider thinks like that: I know that I'm one of the best riders in the world, for myself. You don't have to believe it or wha tever. I think it's good for riders to think that way. I think Scott' s (Russell) u p there, and other guys are d efinitely up there, as far as riders. The only thing I'd like to do with SODs is go over the re on an NSR500 Honda and show them what J can do. And I can guarantee you that I'd be finishing top five, bad day, top three, good days and winning them and I'd be right in there for the championship run. All respect to Mick Doohan a nd Luca Cadalora and all these other gu ys, especia lly Mick Doohan going real fast. He' s on a good machine, but you still got to ride it. But, what I'm saying is, J feel that on a good bike I could go there and do that. Because in '92, I was on the most horrible machine I've ever seen in my life and I was able to do some results. I was riding some pl a ces where I thought I should h ave be en lapped at least five times in the race and I didn' t get lapped once. I was thinking "When are th ese guys comin g by me? I'm sto pped rig ht he re on the track. I can't tum this bike." It's a n ightmar e. I' d wake up at night yelling, "No!" It got better at the end of the year when they let you work with the suspension guys, didn't it? It got a bit better, but not a whole lot. The rea l place wh ere it worked a lot was Sao Paolo because all the comers were positive camber and that' s th e on ly place whe re I could feel the front - th e fro n t end would really tra ck around the tra ck. It was an awful track. _I thou gh t it was a nice track. Excep t coming onto the front straight. Yea h, t ha t's d an gerou s. But I me an you' re coming out of the infield of Dayton a going u p the b an kin g and it's the I same. GP gu ys just get ru ffled over any thing, es pecially a new track. I didn't think it was that bad. Of cou rse, bein g a • new tr ack it wasn ' t p erfect so it got a really bad rap . Woul d you rather ride the Grands Prix - or World Superbike? . I'd rather rid e a 500 for the rea son that j they th ink they're pretty hot stu ff over there and I kn ow I can run with them. • May be other gu ys can run, but I know I w ha t I can do. I'd like to go ther e and, like I said, I could go over there and win the championship. If they didn't want me back, I'd come back to the States - I love • the States. I' ve d on e all my racing her e and I'm really happy here. I get offers to go World Superbike.often an d, unl ess it's rea lly a bett er offer, I d on't go. The States is wh ere I want to be. Was one of your offers for 1995 to go to • World Superbike? _Last year, th e offers to go to World Superbike were really intense. This year we had a few offers, but nothing really [ too serio us. The offer from Rob Muzzy was for the U.S.? ~Yeah, and I wa nted it that way. Maybe I cou ld have asked for World Superbike or " maybe it was World 'Superbike, I d on't f eve n rem ember. Alan (Lab rosse, DuHam el ' s m anager) wou ld kn ow. I _don't mind ,World Superb ike, ther e ar e good ra cers there and Scott is doing a 9great job. But, I've raced with Scott, and , I've raced with (Do u g ) Polen and th e , D ucati and Kaw asaki, and we're about th e same sp eed - g iv e or t ake a few L~ • things. ~ ll,£ :J' -. -c..~::::::;.~ .. a~mmss 1 '8 , / 8 S .,gDUN.£OP ~ StickWithUs . ~~ .
