got the intermedia tes on and I talked Miguel into going out and scuffing my tires for me because I wasn't real ready for slicks just yet. Obviously, that's one of the things I have to learn, going out on new tires and learning how to scrub them in. W ho's going t o b e w ork i n g on th e bik es ? Al Stangle r and Craig Fill m e r . I've known AI for a long tim e and Craig's from my part of the world, out in Cal ifornia, but I ha ven 't really known him all th at well. From what I understand those ar e the guys that are turning the wrenches on them at the track and also at the facto ry. I can' t really say which on e's my crew chief or m y tuner, it's kin d of a collaborative effort on everybody's pa rt. Will you still b e working with Kenny Tolb ert on the dirt tracks? That's still up in the air right now. Right now w e h ave a ve rba l agreem ent that he' s going to tune my bike s for the dirt tr ac ks, n ot for th e road race, but he's undecided . We nex t spoke to Carr after he had been around the track a number of laps on the VR1000 at Daytona. What are your first impressions of Da yt ona? I've been more or less concentrating on exit speeds beca use they correlate to top speeds. Through the apex it's better to maintain apex speed and make time on the exit. Are you sliding the back tire much? Oh , defini tely. Of course a lot of that can be the tires we're running, too. They're pretty hard .. I don't know how slick it would be if we had a normal-compound tire on, regular in termediates. It's a litt le slick out there. What' s the hardest part about learning this track? Wha t I'm having the most trou ble wi th is staying in a co nsisten t s pot on th e banking. I'm l ending to wander quite a bit. I'd like to be more stable and stay on the wh ite lines more. I feel like a drunk ou t th ere. I'm havin g trouble w ith th e com p ress ion and keeping th e thing on line, but tha t w ill co me w ith ti me . I don't think it's a bike problem, it's more me. I had the same problem when I rode ne re in the past. Some of the pavemen t cha nges are a little d ifferent for me. Like coming ou t of the infie ld and going up on the banking the thing seems to be a little slick, bu t it' s th e same for everybody. It's a little slick once you straighten up coming out of the chicane. Were you out there with anyone else? I don't know what Pascal (Picotte) was riding. I think he was on a 600 and he pas sed me a cou ple of times going into the International Horseshoe and I'd get hi m back on the West Bank ing. I d on 't know if he pulled off or whatever. All of a su d den he wa sn't there any more. Was h e doing anything di ff erently that you could learn ? I was tr ying not to follow rig ht on hi s tail. I wasn't reall y trying to race with him, to be honest. I'm jus t trying to rid e the lines th at I feel co m fo rta b le w it h. Rightnow my en trances to the comers are low in some areas and high in others, I don't hav e that quite d own jus t yet. But I'm steadily getting ther e. Being up on the banking, is that li ke anythi ng you've eve r felt be fore? No t a t those speeds. I've been around this banking before on the old Luc ifer' s Hammer and that thing ran pretty good, but thes e thi ng s are ob viously running uite a bit better. There's nothing that you can compare it to except maybe the firs t part of a loop-de-Ioop on a rollercoaster.
