Try as he might, the sport's wi nningest rider coul d neve r seem to score the win at the pesky event, and ha d com e away empty ha nd ed in h is p revio us fo u r attempts. But like they say, it's better late than never. At the opening round of the Ind oor Trials World Championship Series, th e si x-t ime World Champion dueled to the e n d with rival s Marc Colomer a nd Amos Bilba o, a nd emerged victorious aboard his factory Gas Gas JT25 Contact. The Spo rts Are na of Val en cia was fill ed to capacity an d th e publi c w as anxiou s a nd ex ci te d to ha ve the firs t round of the Ind oor Trials World Cha mpionships begin. A total of nine sections and a few min or rul e chan ges made for an action-filled evening wi th the men of dynam ic balance. The first rider to take to the sections was the young, 16-year-old Ma rcel Justribo, who demonstrated that he ha s the J skills to be a future cha mp ion . Being the fi rst rider of the evening, how ever, made the youngster very nervous. The second rider to tackle the sections wa s the po pular Bilbao. Mounted aboard a Montesa Cota , the man from Santander was arguably the most popular rider 'of the evening, and his fans followed his every move. Confident and spectacu lar, it was vint age Bilb ao, for su re. Amos showed g reat desire, es pecially on ·the castle sec tion, where he lost con tro l of his bik e, which lu cki ly ca me. to res t aga inst one of the safety rails, narrow ly avoiding a 25-foot drop to the concrete floor below. Beta' s Colomer, the reign ing In door World Cha m pion, wa s th e thi rd man out , and he dem onstrated why he ho lds the title. Colomer posted the lowest loop of the eveni ng, and won a dir ect tran sfer to the fina ls . Co lo mer' s excelle n t rid e was in direct con tras t to that of Englishman Dou gie Lampkin, who wa s not in the best form . The Brit finis hed jus t a few points ahead of Justribo. Veteran Donato Miglio was perform ing as usu al - his elegant, yet spectacu lar sty le is ad mired by all - but it wa s not enough to gain access to the final. The storv was the sa me for Pantie's Toinmi Ahva la, n umber-two in the Ind oor Series. The 1992 Wo rld Champion never gained his rhythm after a huge cras h o n sectio n on e , which damaged his Fantic and kept him ou t of the final three traps. Bilbao and his followers were th e beneficiaries of Ahvala 's misfort u ne, and Co lorne r, Ta r res a n d Bilba o wo uld comprise the final round. Thro ug ho ut the last loop, it w as Tar res who ma d e th e cro wd ga sp in awe. Fro m th e first sectio n to the last, Ta rres was spectacular and solid, leav. ing no do ub t that he would no lon ger acce p t second place in Va le n cia . The ni ght w a s h is, and he pu t on a clini c for the spectators and other riders, as l"N well. Sports Arena of Valencia Valencia, Spa in Results: November 19 Main: }or d i Terres (G-C); 2 .
