Geo rge Hend rickson, 61, a fixture at loca l dirt track and mot ocross events in Southern California, died of cancer in El Cajon, California, 0(:\ October 27. Hendrickson, a former AMA official, was a paraplegic who helped devise and mar- ket a hand con trol for disabled motorists that is cu r re ntly sold throughou t the world. Hend rickso n is survived by h is wife Caroly n, two. da ug hters, Roberta Jense n and Doreen Hendrickson, a son , Jason Osb urn, tw o sis ters, a nd two grandchildren. The inaugural Jack Dominick Memorial Awar d was presented to road racer Tetsu Imanishi at the Motorcycle Road racing Association (MRA) awards banqu et in Denver, Colorad o. The 31year-old easily beat Jeff Ward (Kaw) and Mike Beier (Yarn) in the opening moto, and overcame a laterace cras h in the second moto to complete his do uble-rnoto sweep. Ward inherited the lead br iefly when Dubach crashed, but was foiled by a lap ped rider on the las t lap and had to settle for second , overall. Willy Musgrave was th ird in the second mo to ah ead of Beier, but Beier's 3-4 edged out Musgrave's 5-3 for third overall. Mu sgrave was fou rth overall, while Tom Carson (Hon) rounded out the top five. Nea rly 1000 entrants sho wed up for the ever-growi ng tw o-day event. Y What's our number? J eremy McGrath, Doug Henry and Mike laRocco will carry number-one plates in 1995, a s they are the reigning champions of the American Motorcyclist Association 's three prem iere motocross and s u percross se ries. Tw o-time Supercross Champ ion McGrath will wear a number one at the indoo r events, while two-time 125cc National Champion Henry and 250cc Nat ional Champion laRocco will hav e the honors at the outdoor Nationals. All three have also been assigned alternate numbers to use at the events in which they are not champions. For instance, McGrath will carry a number one indoors, but a number three outdoors. Rider numbers are assigned based on a points system derived from the 250cc Supercross, and 125 and 250cc Nationals only. The 125cc Eastern and Western Regional Sup ercross Series do not pay National points. Form e r AMA Superbike N a tion al Ch ampion Th omas Stevens called the Cycle News offices to tell us tha t he has signed a contract to ride for Yoshimura Suzu ki in the 1995 AMA U.S. Superbike Nation al Championship. "I've sign ed a o ne-y ea r deal with Suz uki and I'm read y to go racing again," Stevens said. The de al is for superbike only, although Stevens did offer his services to race in the AMA 750cc Supersport class. "They d idn't want me to take any attentio n away from the superbike," Stevens said. "They' re very committed to getting bette r results." Stevens will be jo ined on th e three-rider team by Fred Me rkel and Do nald Jacks: Of the addition of Merkel, Stevens said: "It's just another guy to compare my skills against."
