GP, and I haven't seen any letters published about the event, so I' m writing th is one. Congratul a tions Kenny Roberts, OORNA, SCRAMP and everybod y else 'tha t was involved in makin g it happen for us, the people who put our money and efforts where ou r mouths are, and who make the trip to Laguna part of a world-class act. It is a shame that to have a successful (read profitable) event of this magnitude, the y may have to move it to another track , due to the apathy of the motorcycling crowd in the state of California. Shame on you squids! Kenny, keep up the good work, and whatever track you promote the GP at, I can tell you one thing; we will be there. JoseObando Phoenix, AZ Thanks, Dianne Thanks, Dianne Feinstein, for working so hard to get the Desert Protection Act passed. . Also, thanks for the millions of acres of desert I can no longer gain access to on any type of motor vehicle. Thanks also for the added millions of new taxpayer dollars that will be needed to maintain and patrol these millions of acres. Oh, and I'm sure the hundreds of small businesses will thank you when they have to close their doors because you helped pull the rug from under their livelihood of selling parts, supplies and services to the tens of thousands who liked to enjoy the beauty of the desert in a motor vehicle. That lost business sure won't help the tax base of California, but you know that. By the way, how much does the Sierra Club pay in taxes? _ So thanks, Dianne. Thanks for nothing! Bob Gui der Stinson Beach, CA No thanks, Dianne I just read your article on putting the California Desert Plan in perspective (October 26, issue #42). You made the HAREAND HOUND Hamel caps title with Lucerne Nat'l win ROAD RACING Many crowned at Daytona Race of Champions TEST 1995 KTM 250 E/XC Jim says bye It is with some sadness that I report to Cycle News readers that I am leaving th e AMA to work for th e CelI ular Telecommunications Industry Association . During my eight years as a lobbyist for the AMA, I've enjoyed the support of President Ed Youngblood and Vice President Rob Rasor as well as my fellow staff members and colleagues at the AMA. Together, we've achieved some notable victories for motorcyclists. You can be certain tha t the AMA is well poised to bring motorcycling into the 21st century by protecting our right to ride. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and the many friends I've made in the motorcycling community for their continuous support of the AMA's mission. Without our loyal members, our achievements would be impossible. Finally, for anyone considering a career in legislative affairs, the AMA has an opening in the goverment relations department. A competitive salary is offered with excellent benefits and relocation expenses paid. The opportunity to fight for motorcyclists' rights is a personally rewarding endevor as only I can tell you. Meanwhile, I plan to stay involved in mo torcycling by supporting the AMA's legislative agenda. To all my friends in the mo torcycling community, this is not goodbye; I hope to see y'all down the road or on the trail. _ Jim Bensberg Was hi ngton, DC MOTOCROSS Brown cleans up at Muddy CreekMX FEATURES HARE SCRAMBLES Plessinger powers to Millfield Nat1 victory : statemen t th at there are one million ATV and d irt bike riders in the state of Californi a. If this is tru e, add to them all th e four-w hee l-d rive enthusiasts. We should certainly, as a group, be able to vo te out the present sen a to r, Dianne Feinste in . And, if we can accomplish that, ma ybe it w ill send a message to Presid ent Clinton that he shouldn't sign that bill into law, because if he does we 'can mak e sure he doesn't cany the state of California in his re-election bid . I am positive he needs California in order to be re-elected. This is our time and way to stop this kind of legislation! Bob Killian Thousand Oaks, CA 6 8 l0 Printed in U. S.A. In review, it looks like 1994 is going to go down as the worst year for America's in te rn a ti on a l racing contingent s ince... well , si n ce America started having an in tern a tional racing con tingent. I mean, first we lose the MX des Nations crown that we'd had a lock on fo r 13 yea rs . Then w e relinquish the Speedway World Championship. Next it's the 500cc Grand Prix road racing title, and finally th e Superbike World Championship. And just in case there was any doubt which way things were going, we couldn't even manage to hold our own National Superbike title. Can you say, "So long, mate"? Seriously, though, none of the new champions could have ascended to their thrones without deserving it, so they should all receive our most sincere congratulations. Even the ones who came from other countries, prom ised they'd respect us in th e morning, and then used the AM A championship as a stepping stone to greener pastures. Actually, as poorly as we fared in the Grands Prix this year, I'm even more worried about the years to come. Think about it . With Kevin Schwantz being slated for retirement by this time next year, and the Cagiva albatross having almost certainly sunk poor Doug Chan dler's career, the only 500cc GP rider who'll be left to act as ambassador to America will be that turkey John Kocinski . ' Please, tell me it ain 't so! John Garner San Lean d ro, CA Letters to the ed itor sh o uld be se nt to Voices, Cycle News, P.O. Box 498, Long Beach, CA 90806-0498 or faxed to 310/427-6685.
