Tilley's HarleyDavidson-mounted Scott Zam. ~ pach was the favorite for the first-ever World Ha rley eve n t, and the outgo ing AMA Tw in Sports Ch ampion didn't disappoint, winning both sevenlap legs . Along the way, Zampach survived the inevitable drafting wars, continued a growing controversy involving upstart teenaged sensation Matt Wait, and proved why he is still considered the Harley-Davidson 883 rider to beat . H-D joined with Daytona International Speedway and the AMA/CCS organization to announce this shootout during spring Speed Week, stating that the y hope to build this concept into a major, yea r-en d e ve n t. With $25,000 up for grabs, the race attracted 53 entries, including riders from England, Austra lia and Canada. The Brits ha ve had the ir own series for several years, and champ Robin Kendall was on hand for his second Daytona Harley campaign, stru ggling to come to terms with the different machine specifications (mainly carburetors) that the more s t rict U.S. rules require. The World Final. was the only even t of the thankfully sunny "Race Of Champions" weekend that offered timed qualifying, the twins taking to the track for a short session midmorning on Saturday. Using a new-specification Dunlop tire for the first time. Zampach teamed with arch-rival Shawn Higbee to draft his way to a new class course record at 2minutes, 13.2-seconds. This event would mark the last time that Zampach would run his long-held number-one plate, and the rider who would mount the solo d igit for 1995, Bartels' team leader Higbee, netted a close second with a lap at 2:13.299. An on-form Ben Bostrom and Wait completed the front row, while living legend Jay Springsteen, Aaron Yat es, Billy Graef and Ronald McGill mad e up the second row . Kenda ll , s tr uggli ng wi th va rio us small problems, managed to qua lify 17th and top foreigner, heading the fifth row, with Australian superbike racer turned Harley pil ot John Allen a longsid e for 20th. Row five sta rted with Canadian Owen We ich el 's brand-new machine with both Weichel and Allen bUS)l> with setup in th eir second -ever Tw inSports outings. Before the firs t seven-lap leg of the Harley final opened Sunday afternoon's feature race program, the mid-Saturday AMA/CCS National offered most of the top riders a chance to practice their allimportant drafting tactics, and the jetting and gearing choices that slips treaming requires. Th is unoffical warm-up race turned into a fight for first between Wait, Zampach and Higbee, with even tual fourthplace finisher Chuck Blackmon slipping from the lead group with a lap to go. On the last lap, Higbee took first on the run to the chican e as Zampach hung back in typical style. The three machines then headed onto tum three of th e Superspeed way nose to tail, with Higbee and Zampach both dropping low to try for the lead . n'
