Webster, Buckley best
Woodland Vintage Motocross
By Clay Ught
WOODLAND, WA.OCT.22
H usqva rna rider Keith Webster and Yamahamoun ted Jesse Buck le y we re among the big
winners at the Vintage Dirt-sanctioned vintage
motocross a t Woodland Motocross Park, which
drew a large contingent of riders from Wash·
ington. Oregon and Canada for the se ries opener.
Webs ter rode impressively en route to wins
in the 30+ a n d Open Expert classes . In both
eve nts, Webster went relatively u nchallenged.
Suzuki-mounted Bryan Murphy led pa rt of the
first Open moto, fini shing second to Webster,
and chased Webs ter to the finis h in moto two.
Webster, the lone Expert , picked up the ove rall,
whi le Murphy won the Amateur portion ahead
of Mike Ad ler and Don Kauffman.
In the 30+ class, which also ran combined in
Expert/ Amateur configuratio n, Webster, riding
the Revord Racing /Redline Oil-backed Husky,
ha d tough er competit ion, as Rickman rid ers
John Smith and Bill Brown cha sed him to the
flag in moto one. Smith hounded Webster again
in mota two before fini shing second . Brown
again posted third, good for the Amateur win
ahead of Bultaco rider Monte Bloemke and
Adler.
It wa s a surp rise wh en Buckley, like Web-ster, showed up to ride locally, rather than contesting the Hollister Vintage MX National. Buckley's 1974 Yamaha 2SO was more than a match
for the competition that wished he'd gone south
af te r witnessing his 1-1 per formances . Sm ith
hounded Buckl ey, but wa s again relegated to
second ov erall. Takin g the top Ama te ur spo t
was Bloemke, who beat mote-one winner Steve
Kauffman, while Canadian Dean Newton' and
O reg on 's Jeff Gleason battled fo r th ird, which
wen t to Newton.
Honda-mounted LaFaye McCarver ac ed
both 125cc motos, beating a surprising Rich
Sipp, Jr. - a l(}.year-old local 80cc speedster - and
Steve Kauffman, wh o battled to the finish .

Contractors-backed Brian Hess claimed h is
ninth overall win for the '94 season at the 10th
round of the VCHS series in Newport News,
Virginia .
Hess assumed the lead on the second lap
after George Greer had taken it for a short time .
Hungry for a chance to catch up wa s Ste ve
Arthur, who was not on the line by the time the
race started and had mo re tha n 45 seco nds to
make up. The ba ttl e between Hess a nd Greer
made some of the crowd watching think back to
1989 when these two battl ed for the 125cc class.
Hess kept the lead an d took the w in. followed
by Gree r and Arth u r.
The 2SO/5OOcc A class wa s very in teresti ng
to watch. Tommy Handy got the ho lesho t, followed by Mar k Allman and Timmy Mitchell. By
the end of the second lap, Allma n ha d taken the
lead, followed by Mitchell and Handy. A pass in
the woods gave Mitchell the lead , but a hungry
A1lman kep t dose to him. Ha ndy fell back and
took fifth place after Andrew Williams and Scotty Williams sneaked up on him and loo k third
and fourth place, respectively.
In the Senio r class, Rob ert Cox tooK th e
holeshot and kept the lead to the flag, but Stan
Norris mad e a good show of it af te r runn ing
four th in to the w oods , followe d b y Bob
Williams. By the end ~f the second lap , Norris
had pulled up to seco nd p lace, with Williams
trailing at one of the checkpoints in the woods.
Williams made a move on Norris and took the
lea d , but it wa s sho rt- live d , and Norris had
mad e the pass back and mov ed up to ",""ond
place. With only a four-second advantage, Norris clai me d the se co nd. p lace fin ish, a nd
Williams took third.
