It's been a long time since I've been in Victory Lane at Daytona." Even with eight rows of starters, it was hard to see how the 600 round could be any more exciting than the big-bike race, and Harrington ended any hope of that early. Riding an American Flyersen tere d CBR600 F2, Harrington quickly got down to a m id-2:02 pa ce, shaking loose of early leader Robert Miosek as w ell a s William Luke, Mike M u rp h y, Roberti and Jam ie Bowman. Also in this grou p was reign ing class champ David Esto k, who cam e up from the back row of the gri d on the number one machine. - By ha lf dis t an ce - la p five - the s moo th Ha rrington was a lm os t three s e co n d s cl ear of Murphy , who had Es to k, Bowman, Lu ke and Rob erti on his tail. T hen the secon d g rou p was slowed when Mu rphy we n t inside Estok on the brakes co ming off the ban kin g in to tu m one. Unfortuna tely, Mu rp hy co uld n't ma ke the move work, running wi d e and taking the hapless Estok with him onto the grass . Back on track, Murphy continued but Estok fell at the dogleg, possib ly beca use of de bris stu ck to his warm tires. With a lap to go Harrington wa s an im p ress ive 10 seconds ah ead of a threeway fight for runn er-up honors be tween d o w n-on- power Bowman, Roberti and Lu ke. As former top Amateur Harrington earned a convinci ng victo ry, Bowman somehow man aged to lead exiting the chicane but still snatch second by half a b ike length fro m Rob erti with Luke right behind for fourth. Mutiple-race-winner and Harrington teammate Murphy had to settle for fifth, as Jason Brookshaw, Stu Morrison, Brian Gibbs, Brett Metzger and Miose k rounded out the top 10. Unlike last year, pos trace inspection revealed no abnormalities in eithe r of the Honda Challenge rounds . "Ever since I started runnin' on Dunlops at the end of the year, I was concentratin g on this race, " Harrington said in Victory Lane. "I d idn't really know w ha t to expect from the opposition, but I knew I had plen ty of horsepo wer to get around o ut there. I knew I ha d to get a good start and I d id - I'm rea lly pumped !" "We were all up there o n the firs t three rows," stated runner-up Bowman, himself a multi-time AMA /CCS champ. " We all knew w hat we had to d o, and Todd did it. You had to have the right plan to pull away, the first lap was pretty hairy." Roberti was a man of few words in his first of two Honda Challenge trips to Victo ry Lane: "I' m very happy. I have to thank Dunlop for keeping me up all race, I ha ve a great team and I hope to wo rk with Mike Ve1asco in the future." Ve1asco re turned the yo un g Rob erti's complem ents on the P.A., and sai d he wo uld help the North West Champ if a deal to run F reddie Sp encer o n s u perbikes dosen't work out for 1995.
