A delighted Tilly sta ted that he had
the best rider in the field with Zampach,
and continued: "There may be guys who
are a little braver, but when it comes to
street-savvy-wise, there is nobody ou t
there that 's any smoother, any smarter. I
said to Scott tha t if we're going to give
th e number- on e p lat e to Bill (Bartels),
let's win 'em both: let's go out in a blaze
of glory. I geared that thing so it should
have blown apart! "
Zampach hasn't confirmed if he will
race an 883 in 1995, but the in nag ural
-World Championship success has to be
an incentive.

Hit's such a drafting war on these
Harleys," reflected Zampach after his
opening-leg win. "Don Tilley's been
helping me quite a bit, you know, the old
NASCAR guru - he says you ain't gonna
pass uphill on these bikes (explaining
Zampach's low lines). It was an excellent
race, but it's so tough on these 883s with
no aerodynamic assistance. You can get
awa y from them on the infield, then all of
a sudden three bikes would go whizzing
by you on the back stretch.
Prior to race two, Higbee got his bike
back into something resembling running
order (he had to have his seat mounts
tightened after the warm-up lap), whil e
Yates changed gearing and replaced a
leaking seal o n the Pat Mo roney
machin e. Even though he had the points
lead, Zampach knew that the motocrossstyle points system would make it possible for Blackmon to take the overall win
if Blackmon finished ahead of Zampach
in the second leg.
.
Zampach grabbed the lead from Higbee and Bostrom at the start of part two
with Yates looking to make a grea t move
ar ound the leaders in the International
Horseshoe before someone moved over
on him, almost putting Yates in the grass.
Dropping several spots and completing
the turn on the very dusty verge, Yates
recovered to grab second behind Zarn pach as the field started lap two.
Turning laps in the mid-2:14 range,
Zampach, Higbee, Bostrom and Blackmon gradually split from another assem bly, this one made u p of Yates, Shawn
McNary, McGill , Englishman Kendall
an d Graef. Barnes crashed from the top
10 in turn one on lap three.
Once again shedding Bostrom near
the checkered, Higbee headed Zamapch
and Blackmon starting the final tour.
Higbee dipped very low between oval
H
turns one and two, Zampach pau sing
before takin g the lead with a high pass
on the run to the chicane. Charging back
onto the banking for the final time, Zampach took an uncharacteristic lead with
Higbee and Blackmon on his tail.
Heading onto the tri -o val, Hi gbee
took 'the lead with yet another low move,
Zampach moving high before trying an
even more inside move of his own, taking to the Superspeedway's flat apron.
This allowed Zampach to win by an just
one one-hundredth of a second, a much
bigger margin than the previous leg.
Higbee had to settle for second with
Blackmon third, and Bostrom fourth
ahead of Yates, while occasional road
racer Springsteen netted sixth just in
front McNary, Allen, McGill and out. drafted 10th-place finisher Kendall - top
non-regular.
While Harley's Art Gomper presented
the awards in Victory Lane, soon- to-befather Zampach handled P.R. duties, saying that, H a joy to be here at Daytona
It's
racing Ha rley-Davidson motorcycles. We
put this bike on pole, we won both races
and we proved why we carried the num ber-on e plat e for th ree years. 1 had to
give it up to Sha wn this yea r, bu t th is
proves that I'm sti ll out there push ing
with the youn g guys."
When asked about his decison to go to
the usually unused flat inside area of the
oval, Zampach rep lied tha t, "the way I
see it, we're racing on asphalt, and where
the grass is, is where the edge of the track
is. 1 was using every inch I could get trying to gain as much speed as possible. It's
great racing with Sha wn, we've had a
good year of close competition . The second race was more comfortable because
you didn't have to deal with Wait sliding
sideways at 120 mph."
"I was a little shaky going out on a
bike that was all bent up," adm itted a
subdued Higbee. "I d idn't know wha t
was wrong with it, it soun ded different
and it felt different. I didn't ha ve qu ite
th e motor, horsepower tells th e tale
down here, but it was exciting and that 's
racing."
