CMClBridgesloneJSunsfar Sprockets Trans-Cal Final Huffman spoils, Healey conquers Adelanto "Showdown" ·M X By Scott Hoffman ADELANTO, CA, OCT. 1-2 n the fin al round of CMC's Bridgestone-Suns tar Sprocke ts Trans-Cal Nationals, northern and sou thern riders carne out to battle it ou t for series title s, but Team Suzuki 's Dam on Huffman showed up to the la st event at Sunrise Valley Raceway to anni hilate the cornpetition in both the 125 and 250c c Pro cl asses a t Su nrise Valley Raceway. Despite the p resence of H uffman, Mike Heal ey was able to ta ke horne titles in the 125cc, 250cc and Vet Pro classes. Healey had to battle it out with FMF-backed; northern rider Spud "Pota to Man" Walters in the 125 and 250cc divisions. On the final day of competition, it was Healey versus Walters with AMA Western Regional Supercross Champion Huffman thrown in the mix. In the first 250cc Pro race, FMF/JT-backed Michael Brandes nailed the start, while Healey, Walters and Terry Parsons h over ed behind; Huffman was back in the pack and charging hard. Healey and Brandes fough t over the lead for the first hall of the race until a broken chain put Brandes ou t. Me anwhile, H u ffm an h ad moved up to challenge and pass Healey for th e lead. With Hu ffman pullin g away, Healey held on to th ird as Ron Lechien move d past Walters . Lechien's cha rg e was sh ort-lived, as he slid out and fell bac k into the pack. When the flag flew ,i t was H uffman, Healey and Walters finishing 1-2-3. I (Top) Despite already having wrapped up the title, Dave SChultz (near lane) won his ninth NHRA National event at the Sears Craftsman Nationals. (Above) Damon Huffman (20) won the battle at Sunrise Valley Raceway's CMC Trans-Cal Rnal MX, but Mike Healey won the war. Huffman topped the 125 and 250cc Pro classes on the day, while Healey clinched the series titles In both divisions. In moto two, fans wer e sho wn just how Huffman earned his factory ride, as . he quickly jumped out fron t, with Parsons and Lanc e Smail holding secon d and thi rd. By the third lap, Heale y was able to move into the runner-up spot, followe d shortly by Walters in third. While Huffman was on a Sunday cruise, his brain went awry and he slid out. Hu ffman fell back to sixth at one point and an oth e r bobble h eld hi m back again. With on ly fo u r laps rem a in ing , Huffman pulled ou t all stops and rode like a madman . Huffman flew through the field like a tactician, never missing a bea t. When it was all over, Huffman not only caught Healey, but made the pass a nd p ulled some dis tance ou t front. Walters was able to ho ld on to third. In the BOcc (7-11)class, Shane Bess was able to outrid e Sean Hamb lin and Bryan Jaramillo in the second moto to claim the victory. Hamblin and Bess battled in the first moto until a crash put Hamb lin back to third behind Jaram illo. In the second race it was all Bess; he pulled the holeshot and rode his own race. Jaramillo was on the gas in the second race, but a crash put him out of conten tion for the lead while Hamb lin held on to second. In the Pee Wee Juni or race, Ch ri s Nih an won back-to-beck motos to take the victory over Chris Blose and Anthony Ho user. Nihan was able to take the f,N win in Satu rda y's race as well. NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series:Round 1 0 Schultz wins his ninth at Sears 'C ftsm nNat'ls ra a By Todd Veney . TOPEKA, KS, SEPT.3O-OCT. 2 ave Schultz does n't lose - that's a given - but a t th e NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationa ls, held on the s tra ightaway por tion of expansive Hea rtland Park Tope ka , he was, a t times, vulnerable. In the Pro St oc k fi nal , Sch u ltz could n't get in to fourth gea r and lost preciou s time to opponent John Smith, who improved dramatically from earlier runs to a 7. 79 / 174.96 - ju st th ree hundred th s of a second off Sch ultz ' s tim e - bu t fouled, handing Schultz his ninth NHRA Natio nal win in 1994. "When I went to shif t from third to fo u r th gea r, I had to go fo r it three times," said Schultz, who won with a 7.76/176.57, his slowest time since the first round. "I had to roll off the throttle to get it into gear . If John hadn't redlighted agains t me, that could have been the end of our win streak." Sch ult z's w ell-docu mented st reak includes the nine victories in 10 NHRA Nation al-event starts this season and 15 of 16 since last year, the sing le-season a n d all- time moto rcycl e d rag r acin g records for any category . Besides the final, Schultz's only lapse at the Sears Cra ftsman Nationals, which ·he also won last year, occurred almos t before the event began, when he failed to ap pea r on the starting line in time for the first of fou r quali fying sessions and missed his shot at the track. A sched uling quirk pu shed the sessio n forwar d 30 m inu tes to 2:30 p.m., and it co uldn't ha ve corne a t a mor e inconveni ent time for Sch ultz - right when it was his turn to run in the first p ai r in g. (A d raw is hel d befor e each even t to determine who has .to run first becau se no one w an ts to serve as a gu inea pig for the rest of the ride rs, and tea ms re fused to file in to th e stagi ng lanes when the call went out.) Smith knew before the final that he, like Phillips, w as ou tpowered compared to Schultz. Perh a p s t rying to minimize that deficit, Smith, who has ne ver raced anyone else in an NHRA nation al-eve nt final, a nticip ated the li g h t for a ~2 8 0 rea ctio n ti me an d instant disqua lification. It was Smith's · fourth runner- u p since he beat Schu ltz in the ir fi rst e nco unte r at t h e 1993 ~ Gat ornation als. D Results David Schultz (Suz) 7.76/17357 def.
