Round 3:Lincoln TrailsMotosport . ··M T C O S·, OO R S .'. AMA KTMIDirt ShirtslHonda of T F C roy all lassic Series ' • r e a ra es By Brenden Kearns and Jennifer Royer CASEY, n, OCT. 9 T he 1994 AMA Fall Classic p resented by Dir t Shirts, Ho nda of Troy and KTM mot orcycles m ad e its third stop of th e series a grand one at Central Illinois' Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey, and when all was said and done, Ho nda rider Mike Brown, from Gray, Tennessee, rebounded from his second-place finish at the previous Englishtown event to finish first in the premier 2S0/0pen class and, more importantly, move into the series points lead, Brown finished second to new Honda of Troy team rider James Dobb but came back to win the all-important second moto to wrap up the overall victory. Dobb could finish no higher than sixth in the final moto, relegating him to th ird ove ra ll for th e d ay. Finishing in between Brown and Dobb in the overall bracket was Kawasaki's Robbie Skaggs, w ho turned in two consistent thirdpl ace fin ishes. Fourth over all wen t to DeHoop and fifth to Craig No ack. By w inning, Brown now enjoys a 27. point lea d over the defending champ, DeHoop, 137-110. Twe nty points back, in third, is Honda rider Kevin Crine, while Dobb (84 points) and Skaggs (78) round out the top five. In the 12Scc A Pro class, Skaggs came back to win both motos for top honors, while seco nd and third overall wen t to Noack and Jay Wagner, resp ectively. In th e firs t 250/0pen moto, Brown launched his Honda into the early lead and held on to the point position until he an d Noack tan gled in a sweeper. "The re was a big rut in the sweeper, I went outside and p ulled back in, side by s id e to Bro w n, " said Noa ck . "I got sucked into his handlebars and Mike wen t down and I wen t off the side of the track. " "The crash really helped me loosen up," sai d Brown who chose to look a t things positively . "My arms were get tin g pretty p umped. Once 1 went down and qui ck ly rec o ve r ed , I felt really relaxed." As he had said, Brown quickly got back on h is bike and began chasing d own Noack, bu t it was Dobb wh o was now leading after taking full advantage of the Brown /Noack get-together. A new factor in the race was Skaggs who was beginning to tum up the pre ssu re in fou rth . Brown eventu ally passed No ack for second, then Skaggs dropped him - Noa ck - back one more spot for thi rd . Dobb and Brown broke 'free from the rest of the pack , then Dobb began experiencing bike problems. "I had about seven laps to go an d my - shock broke," said Dobb . "I just took it easy and cruised and kept my distance." In sp ite of the b roken shock, Dobb he ld on to take the win ahead of Brown and Skaggs, who said, "Once I got past Noack, I pretty much held my position for third ." O nce ag ain, Brown was foun d leading the p ack in the sec ond mo to, just ahead of DeHoop and Crine. Del-loop, however, lost his spot to Crine, "I we nt too wide and Crine came in on the inside line and passed me," said DeH oop. This time, things we nt much easier for Brown, as he cruised out in front for a wire-to-wire victory, b u t there was plenty of action going on behind him . Crine, DeHoop and Skaggs were bat.tling close together, and then, on the e ighth lap, Crine went d o wn , then Dobb, w ho was now using a borrowed shock "that was too stiff" had to make a quick pit to repair a broken visor on his helmet. Skaggs took advantage of Crine's fall and moved in behind second-place DeHoop, while Noack slipped into fourth. DeHoop made a valiant effort to catch Brown but came up just short. "I was determined to catch Mike and fough t it right until the last lap, where I was one bike length behind Brown and the finish." a Li ncoln Trails Mot osport Casey, ill inois Results: Octo be r 9, 1994 2S0/0PEN : 1.
