As the man who defeated the fourstro kes aga in, one has to ask if it is difficu lt t o race a ga in s t the b ig booming bangers . "The thing which disturbs me most is the noise. Wh en they are behind yo u, you don't know if they are on your rear w heel or are 200 meters back. The noise is the same. Sometimes they have an advantage and so metimes we ha ve. Sometim es they use different lines and yo u ha ve to think more to block a po tential pass or to make a mo ve you rs elf. Jack y is a rider who has always tended to use different lines to other riders anyway." Hansson d oes not hide the fact that there has been no great financial reward waiting for him as World Champion this year. "It has been very tou gh . My budget from Swedish sp onso rs was halved compared with 1993 because the national economy is so bad. It was very lucky for me that Van der Heyden came along and helped me, so I didn't have to pay for the Hondas, and I get most of the aftermarket parts for free . "I have to race in as many internationals as possible - and race very good to pay m y bills. I have to pay Eric, I have to pa y my mechanic Bjarne (Peinert), I have to pay my expenses and I have to live myself also. I cannot put any money away in a sa vings account this year." N ot following a su p ers tar lifestyle does n ot worry him th ou gh . "I ha v e flown to a couple of the races which are further away, like Slovakia and Portugal, but I travel normally in the truck with Bjame. I don't mind that. Sometim es it is more work to fly, fixing a hire car and a hotel and finding good food. " Ind ee d Marcus welcomes the p re sence of former Enduro World Champion and motocross GP star Peter Hansson (no relation) as Swedish delegate at every GP. "At the social level it is good that Peter is there, because I have been the only Swedish rider at some GPs and it is nice to be able to chat with Peter in our native tongue when Bjarn e is working on the bike. It is also nice to have someone in the Jury so that I can relax but still know what is going on - if they are watering the track for example - but it doesn't always help to get justice. Just look at Italy. (Martens wasnot noise-tested after losing his silencer.) "I think my success is down to teamwork. Eric, Peter, Bjame and Sjaak have all played a role in my world title." But will he defend the title? "I have an open mind on switching to the 2505. I like the 500s so much and I would like to stay there, but I ha ve to see what is happening. If I got offered a good deal for the 250s I would obviously ha ve to cons ider it, but at present all of my possibilities are for the 500s again." One of those deals is for th e fou rstroke Vertemati. "I convinced myself earlier th is yea r that I could n ot ride four-strokes, but the Verlernati is a very differ en t p roposition to the Husaberg I rode. It revs much higher and I will be going to test it in Italy this fall. I will take my Honda with me also to comp are performance." Whe the r he joins th e four-str oke ranks or remain s faithful to Hon d as, H ans son knows that w hile the 50 0cc W orld Cha m pionship may ha v e los t some of the tinsel glitter since the wi thdrawa l of th e o fficial Japanese teams, the big-bo re class is still the one to get the adrenalin flowing in the b lo od o f any !rue outdoor MX enthusiast. O nly fu ll-gro wn men can ever hope to win th e big-bike crown - and 1994 was the year that Hansson proved he is most definitely no t just the kid brother anymore. a 'LL CLEAR RED ALL AJO ARTERIES.
