"I pla yed with fire and got burned,"
explained Andrews. "I went aro und the
big hill the first time but Norton and
Blackw ell went up it. In fact, Tom my
cam e out ahead of me, so on the second
lap I figu red I could go up if I had to.
Next lap I started to climb a middle hill
but the re was Blackwell coming down
the other way, so I just went for the big
h ill. I made it and got a big lead . I
wasn't goin g to do it aga in but it was
clear when I came around so I just went
for it - big mistake."
, Andrews tip ped over near the top
and had to go back down the hill to start
over. He missed on the second and third
trie s as well before finall y clearing the
ledge. "I had lost fou r minutes by that
time, but the hill becam e more important to me than the race. With all those
people standing around cheering, I just
had to make that damn hill!"
Conner was not having such difficulties and made the middle hill each time
around. In the process he was ab le to
catch and pass Plessinger for the lead by
the beginning of the fifth of six laps. The
race evolved into a tw o-ma n ba t tl e
between Conner - who had to stop at
one point to repl ace a bro ken silencer and Plessinger.
,
"Duane and I rod e togethe r for a couple of laps but wi th two laps to go I got
squirre lly and didn't make it up anoth er
hill," sai d Plessinger of the frien d ly
exchange with Conner. "Duane passed
me there because I had to go back down.
On the last lap 1 made the hi ll bu t he
was still several seconds ahead of me. I
just wen t real, re a l fast a nd fi nally
caug ht sight of him a mile before the finish. 1 followed him for a half mile unti l
he went inside a lapper and the gu y just
came over on him . It was a real unlucky
break for him "
Plessinger finished just inches ahead
of the ' fru strated Conner while Norton
w as a not h er two and a ha lf m in utes
back. Andrews crossed the line 90 seconds later but a fulllO minutes ahead of
fifth overall OnaiI.
Finishing sixth and seventh overall
was Jeff La u th and Da r yl Conner.
Rounding out the top 10 overall were
Blackwell, Bar ry Hawk Jr. and Brian
Keegan .
" It wasn't the greatest ra ce 1 ever
had b ut it was definitely one of the
roughest ones I ever won," sa id
Plessinger. "It was rocky, slippery, wet,
muddy, everything. 1 just didn't ride as
well as 1 feel like I normally do bu t it
was eno ugh. I d id n' t push it until the
last fo ur m iles - I was just on cruise
most of the day."
"There's two races left and to keep
the title I've got to beat Plessinger both
times to w in ," sa id Andrews . "Summers mi gh t be back and Team Suzuki
might be there, which might work to
my advantage. Bu t no ma tter w ho is
th ere I've got to finish ahead of
Plessinger."
'
"I just ne ed to beat Fred one mo re
time and then finish second behind him
the other time," said Plessinger of the
title pictur e. "If you throw one race
awa y I'm ahead by a point. If you count
them all, we're tied. It's been that kind
of year. This is the firs t time that I've
been in the lead all year bu t it's a good
time to be the leader: :
