Brown inherited the lead and stayed ou t front until Dowd caught and passed him at th e ha lfway poin t. Dowd sped away and won with plen ty of roo m to spare. Brown looked to hav e the ove rall victory in ha nd as held large advantage over Ferry, who had to fight h is way past Ji m Neese. Bu t Ferry was cha rging a nd Brow n struggling with rear suspension settings th at were too so ft for th e bumpy track. A f ew la ps from the finish Ferry mad e the decisive pass for second tha t ga ve him the overa ll victory s in ce first-mo to win n e r Carsten languished in ninth. "My arms started to pump up," said a weary-looking Carsten. "I probably could've saved some energy in the first (2S0/Open) rnoto, but I wanted to win the race." Several riders felt the effect of many laps ar oun d the bum py cou rse, especially those competing in the 12Sec Pro Suppo r t class w hich ran the fi rst moto between the featured 2SOcc/Open races . Ferry led much of that first Io-Iap Support heat while Dowd spent the first half of the race moving to second. Dowd reeled in Ferry with two laps to go and after the two exchanged the lead a few times a m id a pack of tap p ers, Dowd edged a head and went on to w in the moto. Ca rst en finished second while Mike Treadwell leapt by Robbie Skaggs at the finish to take third. Ferry wrestled the lead from Neese early in the second rnoto, while Dowd started seventh. Once aga in, Dowd made his way to the front , passing Ferry on the ninth lap and staying out front for the win. Ferry finished second, while Carsten mad e an incredible charge to third after a first-tum fall left him at the back of the pack . In addition to competing in the long 250cc/Open class motos, local James Kapitan and New York's Kurt McMillen logged an additional 32 laps in the 25Plus and Vet Expert classes. Kapitan battled with McMillen and Jerry Seip in both Vet Expert motos to claim the overall win, while McMillen beat Kapitan to the finish line in bot h 25-Plus Expert races . Brock Sellards turned in the mo st laps in Saturday's Amateur class competition as he competed in th e 125 and 250cc Amateur and Schoolboy classes. The former minicycle hotshoe won the first motos of each division with relative ease, b u t the 16-year-old fro m New Philadelphia, Ohio, had to work harder in the second r o u nd s, w hi ch were lengthened by one lap. In the second Schoo lboy moto Sellards started 10th and had to battle with Jeremy Booher. Sellard s disappeared after taking the lead on lap two, leaving Booher a lonely second. It only took Sellards one lap to move to the front of the second 2SOcc Amateur moto. Once again he pulled away to a convincing win. The real race took place for second between Mitchell Hodges and Jason Sybert. Hodges appeared to have the position lo ck ed up when Sybert fell down two laps from the end. But, a lap later, he was off the pace and Sybert went b y to capture seco n d . Shawn Ulikowski also took advantage o f Hodges ' troubles to secure third place. Sellards toughest race came when he fell a t the beginning of the final 125cc Amateur moto . Sybert grabbed the holeshot and pulled out a sizable lead, while Sellards sliced through the 35rider field. Sellards charged all the wa y to second, but the checkers flew a couple of laps befo re he could catch up to winner Sybert. In the first Se nior Amateur class a (Above) M Brown (92) grabs the ike holeshot ahead of Barry Carsten (40), John Dowd (16)and the rest the 25010pen class. (Right) Hometrack favorite Carsten won the first 25OIOpen class moto. 0' moto, Bud Fee took the lead from AMA Professional Motocross Manager Duke Finch on the first lap and scooted away to the win. Jim McGinnis moved into second for a few laps, bu t was overtaken by the battle between Finch and Bill Rule. In the end Rule got the better of Finch to take second. McGinnis led the wa y to sta rt moto two and was joined at the head of th e pack by Fee and Finch. The tfuee stayed close throughou t the six-lap race, an d afte r severa l posi tion cha ng es Fe e passed Finch on the final circuit to score the win. Finch held on to second, while McGinnis claimed third. In th e Collegeboy cla ss, for riders from 17 to 24 years old, J.D. Collins and Paul Currie battled for the lead throughou t moto one. Collins got th e edge on the fifth and final lap and held off Currie's charge at the finish line to score the win. Moto two saw Currie with the ho leshot and he led all six laps of the lengthened moto to claim the win . Collins spent the first lap getting around Rich Zupko, who finished third in moto one, and once he reached second, Currie was out of reach. Joel Dengler advanced to challenge runner-up Collins at th e halfway point, but dropped back later in the race to finish a distant third. 0 Raceway Park Englishtown, NJ Results: October 1-2, 1994 i-i, 2: 250/0PEN EX: I.
