Out in front, it was "no dust as usual " for Hamel, who maintained a stead y pace that avera ged just over 30 miles an hour. Richardson main tained the same pace in second , catching the occasional glimpse of the lea der's dust. Sta ten, who had tucked in behind Richardson when loop two began, was unable to hold on to the n umber-three spot. " I sta rted makin g mistake s in the rocks, and I kind of let Zitterkopf go by, and Capt, too," said Staten. "I didn't have to race with them really because they' re not in my class, so I backed off a bit." Cap t wis hed he had backed off a bit w hen h e h it a rocky uphill h a lf w a y th ro ugh th e 4D-mile seco nd loop . "The bike kicked out sideways and I fell over on my side in a ditch," Cap t explained . The fall blew Capt 's chances of catching Campbell, who was lead ing the fourstroke di vision by just under a minute, so Capt decided to cruise home to ensure a safe finish. "I needed a finish to get the points. N ow all I have to do is finish at Lucerne (round six) an d I've won the fou r-stroke ch ampi ons hip," said Capt. "We'll be prerunning (for the Baja'l(00) in Me xico when they have the last National and I didn't want to ha ve to come all the way back just for that:' Campbell. "There were som e good , tight, single-track canyons out there, too:' Staten took a wire-to-wire win in the Vet class in fifth overall, ahead of Destry "I had some problems bu t I still got here," said Abbott, and Trolli nursed his blistered hands home in seventh. "I try to ride, bu t it was very hard," said the Italian. "The blisters are so big I cou ldn't hold my handlebars. I hu rt too bad to win and after the top three or four, it is not a good finish." Davis' version of a fun cruise" made II up all but two of the positions he 'd lost changing his muffler . "I passed five gu ys, , then (Davis) caught me and blew by me jus t before the end of the loop," said Scott Morris. A last-minute blitz by Davide Trolli got him past Abbott in the last five miles, but the tenacious KTM racer took th e place back when Trolli mi ssed a turn right before the checkered flag. And then it was too late to change anything. For the fourth time in the five-race-old series, Ham el swept out of the loop with nobody else in sight and wheelied past the checkered flag. "For wha t they had to wo rk with, it was great. It kept you on your toes the w h ole time a nd the second loop was great. It was a lot more technical - a lot funner than the first loop:' Despite his fears of being caught by Zitterkopf, Richardson was still in second when his CRSOO crossed the finish, and almost a minute passed before Z itterkopfs KTM250 rocketedhorne to take third overall and the quarter-liter win. "They asked me why I was in the U.s. and I said 1 was here to ride motorcycles. They asked . if I had some way to prove that and 1 said to call Acerbis, " said the Italian. Something went wrong during the con versation with Acerbis and the next thing he kne w, T rolli was being denied entry to th e United States. "I have an artist's visa - it's for sports or movie stars. It lets you wo rk but you can't make money. 1 ca n only make money from Italian" sp ons ors, no t from American sponsors," said Trolli. "Maybe somebody said I get money hereI don't know. I d on't understand. My job is to ride mo torcycles, not to be an immi. gration expert" Immigration officials sent Trolli back to Brazil, because tha t w as where his fligh t ha d originated, and the racer th en had to book a flight back hom e to Italy. '1 went from Rio to Miami to Rio to Amsterdam to Milan o, Italy - three nights in an airplane, and when you buy a ticket right now - a one-way ticket, it costs a lot," said Trolli. "I had to pay and I spent over $4,000. I can 't believe it:' Trolli went to the Ame rican Embassy in Milan and explained his situation. The embassy issued ano ther visa in three days and, after a three-week vaca tion with his family, Trolli hea ded back to Los Angeles. "People' keep asking if I went to prison," said Trolli, with a grin. "No, it was nothing like that. But they took my picture with the numbers across the front of me an d they too k my fingerprin ts.
