and Uewellyn before losing more ground in the final laps . RACE TWO A few hours later - in equally bad conditions - Mauro Lucchia ri was desperate to take revenge for his DNF in the first heat and took command for some five laps. Corser was the first to get into the slipstream of the young Italian, and a few laps later, was followed by Russell. Corser got past Lucchiari a lap .later. Then Russell followed that example, and the duel from the first heat was done all over aga in. After 10 laps, Cors er and Russell were on their ow n again , followed by a lonely Lucc hi ari, and then by Foga rty, who was put under pressure by Pirovano and Casoli. The Briton wa s clea rly stru gglin g to keep up with the two Italians, and soon he dropped back to sixth, with Casoli heading tow ard a certain fourth place (despi te some gear-changing problems ). Pirovano was hesitant about running away and takin g so me more p oint s fro m his Du cat i m arkmate . Th e mental prob le m was resolved au tomatically wh en, seven laps befor e the end, the number-four Du cati started to make very discomforting noises, and Pirovano lost ever more gro und, now hoping that his bike wo uld simply hold on until the end. In the d osing stages, Russell had full control of first, with Corser once again set for second. Nothing woul d chan ge for the first fou r positions, wi th Russell winning in front of Corser, Lucchiari and Casoli. In the end, Fogarty finishe d a lon ely fifth, wh ereas Pirov ano ha d d rop ped ba ck to 12th. Later on, it was discovered tha t the plugs and the pl ug leads on Piro vano's Du ca ti had n ot resisted the amount of water they had been exposed to . Sligh t finished 10th and Crafar finished the race in 15th after one of the four cylinders had given up the ghost. Po len retired a fter th ree laps. "This time, I got a good tire on the bike, bu t unfortu na tely, that on ly ma de the front brake problem worse. I rode in the way of every body, an d I pre ferred to re ti re ins tead of bothering everybody else on the track..." For Russell, thin gs had gone exactly as pla nned . "When I got in front of Troy, I kne w that I could win again. Things look pretty good for the championship now. I know the Phillip Island track pre tty good, and with only five points between me and Foga rt y, I th in k I can w in m y second title." Troy knew what the score was and did not insist an y further. Fogarty finished fifth. "Even this race did not go too well. I kep t missing gears in the last coup le of laps. But I simply do not und erstand wh y the othe r Ducati riders did not slow down. "QUs might cost me dearly at the end of the season," he said. Sligh t, who go t home 10th w it h hi s rear wheel spin ni ng all over the place fr om a too ha rd rear tir e, was n o t as happy. "I'm very disappointed about this weekend . For a couple of races, I had been hoping for rain so that ou r lack of power w ould be compensated for," h e s ai d . "Even this morning, when it started to pour down, I reckoned I still had a fair chan ce to win. Unfortunately, thin gs have not worked out that well. The championshi p is still not over, but definit ely something will ha ve to go wrong with Sco tt or with Ca rl. But H onda will be working overtime to produce some more parts for the Australian final race." Of Donington Park Race Circuit Donlngton Castle, Great Britain Results: October 2, 1994 QUALI FYING: I.
