~J ~~ His ti me wouldn 't hold fo r long, however, as Scott McNeely roos ted up the hill w ith a 6.7667-second time . And then it was Pinsonnault's turn at the hill. The defending 540cc champ opened up the throttle with a no-hold s-barred climb to grab what would be the quickest climb of the first roun d. He stopped the cl ocks w it h a quick 5. 9461 time, putting him on the bu bble. In the second round, Zucco again got the ball rolling, bettering his first time wi th a 6.7425, but his time was still far off that of the top riders. Ted Wilkins ' second run up the hill was slig htly slower tha n Zucco's bes t time, so Wilkins had to rely on his much fas ter firs t-round climb. Tha t ti me would be good eno ugh for second place . "My second climb, I was conc erned with gett ing a g oo d ho lesh ot ," sa id Wilki ns. " It took off so fast, I didn't get time to ge t out of it before tha t fi rst break er, and yo u ha ve to click it jus t right. But I d id n't, I missed it. Mayb e ne xt time." Scott McNeel ey landed third place via his second -run time of 6.3220. " My first run, I had a little trouble," sai d McNeeley. "On my second run, I go t ov er th e ju mp a little slow and it really pulled on the top . I had a real smooth run. The hill's in real nice shape. I got lucky today." Pinsonnault was confident enough in his first run to let that time stand. As it turned out, it was the right choice. "1 had it (the bike) set up in the June hillclimb here," said Pinsonnault. 'That worked out really well and I stuck with that sa me setu p and r picked a d ecent line on the hill." In the 800cc class, Gary Miller set the pace with a 6.3989-second run. Steve Dresser stopped the clock wi th a su perquick 5.8845. That time would hold up to g ive him th e first-ro und lead, over Wad e Williams and Gerenc er. But this w ouldn 't la st fo r lo ng, though. Gerencer ca me out in h is seco n d round and clicked off the quickest time of the da y thus far with a 5.8393. "We did some work on the bike last week," said Gerencer. " It seems to run a littl e better right now tha n it has been. So we may have to stay with this combination." Wade Will ia ms blas ted up the hill but the referee ru led him out of bounds when he rod e over the white chalk that ma rks the lane. His first run would have to hold. Dresser wanted his lead back as he blasted out of the box. He tu rned in an impressive ride bu t came up just sh ort wi th a 5.8602. His time would be good enoug h for seco nd p lace, while Willia ms ' firs t-tum ti me would g ive him third. " 1 got too high off th e ju m p," sa id Dresser. " It took some time off during my first run as well, bu t I still ended up a couple o f hundredths behind hi m (Gerencer): ' C\" WDHl SPD TS 23HD A NUAl DlYM CS GATORBACK CYCLE PARK GAINESVILLE, FL AMA --- ..
