OFF-ROAD.· , . Round 4:Tonopah 300 C'ship Team Race Best in The DeSert Silver State SerieS •. 125cc Pro lead over race-long rivals Alexander and Ellis until their KX125's engine bit the dust halfway through the final loop . Alexander and Ellis were ha ving thei r share of probl em s, too. After returning to pit row to fix a flat early in loop tw o, Alexander crashed so hard that he lost 10 minutes recovering and had to hand the bike over to his partner . for the rest of the race. A couple of places fur ther up in the overa ll s ta ndings, Tim Morton presu med his partner, Brian Schmuckle, was having similar problems . "1 thin k he cras hed his brains out a few times," said Morton, cap tain of the all-black CR250. "Every time he gave me the bike it was bent worse than the time before. 1 have no idea w ha t was going on on his side of the course." As if sli di ng back from second to 17th in loop tw o wa sn 't eno ugh, Zitterkop f and Gray continued to su ffer as they head ed in to loop th r ee. Their silence r fell off as Gray cleare d the end of pit row an d they had to safety wire their KTM's frame together for the las t half of their final lap. But out in fro n t, H am el a nd Davis continued to enjoy a tr ou ble-free ride. They each made sho rt wo r k of th eir final loops and when Davis sto rmed across the finish at the end of the third circuit of the figure eight, the Kawasaki Team Green/ Dunl op/ Bra king/Thor / End u ra / IMS/ N Style /Scolls / Alp in esta r / Bieffe/ Maxima / ProCircu it/Sp rock et Spec./F&L/RK/Magnum /Back Canteen /MAX/DCC-backed KX500 was 25 minutes ahead of its nearest rival. The course was pretty rough - 1 was d oing flying Ws every loop and it got even rougher at the end," said Davis, "but we had fun. " " It was a really fir st-class course we've never done any of this before. 1 don't think anybody has ever raced here before, so that was neat," said Hamel. "Some of the trails were really tight and I feel that's a big advantage for me." The second bike home was the KTM 300 piloted by Daryl Folks and Danny Anderson. "My partner hasn't raced in a year, so 1 did three loops before I got off the bike, bu t he did really well- he made up time," said Folks. Kawell and Hengeveld had nothing at all to report abo ut their trip to third overall and first in the 250 Pro class. "No problems at all - we led the class the whole way," said Hengeveld. Fourth overall went to John Flores and Brent Blount, who reported no problems until Blo u nt crashed the team's CRSOO in the final loop of the race. " The kicks tarter got stuck and 1 couldn't open it up to get the bike started," Blount reported. "We lost some time there, but other than that, we did pretty good. Flores did all the passing on the other side of the course." Scott Morris, who was trying to get used to the team's KX250 after more than a year on a KX5oo, and Aron Huntington, in his first ride back after breaking his femur in March, finished a trouble-free ride to claim fifth overall. Their strategy, accordi ng to Morris, was to take it easy and avoid "doing anything dumb." Over-30 racers Dale Morse and Donnie Morrison ta lked their KX500 home (Top left)Jason Kawell and Steve Hengeveld finis hed third overall but took · 24 the 250cc Pro ell... victory. (Left) Joh n FIoraa and Brent Blount combined efforts for fourth overall and third In the Open Pro e..... to take the Expert class honors in sixth overall. '1 was getting nervous that the lower end was go ing out. It was making a noise and 1 was saying, 'Come on baby, you can do it:" said Morrison. Jeff and Mark Lundgreen overcame a shoulder-jarring crash and a flat lire on their way to seventh ove rall, five minut es ahead of the Pearson b rother s Nick, 16, and -Russel l, 14, who won the 250cc Expert division aboard a KTM. Brian Miller and Mark Morris, winners of the Op en Expert di vision took ninth, and Brand on Gerber was forced to enlist help whe n the Husky he shared w ith Du stin Hea d ma n ga ve up th e ghost 200 yards shy of the checkers and had to be push ed across the line to take 10th overall. Alexand er a nd Ell is g ra bbed th e 125cc Pro hon or s in 15th over all after Braasch and Lehman seize d in the pits before h ead in g in to th e las t 39-m ile loop, and the never-say-die team of Zitterkopf and Gray crosse d the line 22nd overall at the end of three very long figure eigh ts. For Preston Gerber, who rode solo to win the Over-4s Expert d ivision in 52nd overall, two loo ps of th e fig u re eig h t were m ore than eno ug h. Gerb er completed his second loop abou t five min utes before Davis was expected to take the checkered flag and begged course officials not to send him out into loop three. " Please, can 1 wait and just foll ow Da vis in? You can't make me go ou t there again. I'm too tired - and I'm pregnant," said Gerber. Bill McDaniel, who iron-manned 160 miles on a 1981 Yam aha to take the Vinta ge class honors, said two loops was enough for him, too.
