at Grattan Road Race

BElDING, Ml, AUG. 27·28
West Michigan Sport Bike Oub's Greg Gibson
had many misha ps, enabling many to sha re the
spo tligh t for the first tim e this year at Grattan
Racewa y Park.
Th e b iggest brea k w ent to Don & Roy 's backed Tom Girard in Saturday's Expert GTO
25-lap race. As usual, Gibson establ ished a substantial lead early in the race, until the last few
laps when his rear tire began to lose air. Gibson
suspected it was going. but prayed for the white
flag in the hope that he could maintain his lead .
On the strai gh ta way, 500 feet from the checkered flag, Girard passed the struggling Gibson
to steal the win . Done in by a nail in his bra nd
new tire, Gibso n hung on for second place.
Gr eg Hutcheson's race-long th ird position
was briefly threate ned b y the TZ-mo unted
Yamaha of Aint 's Donn Lewis near the end of
the race. Hutcheson prev ailed with Lewis takin g
fourth and Derek Stru ye finishin g fifth.
Girard also got the second big break for lhe
weekend on Sunday during the $1000 Unlim ited
GP. Gibso n, who was havin g tire problems the
entire wee kend, took ins tan t comman d on the
first lap, only to lose both ends coming on to the
straightaway and ended up in the gra ss after a
battle to save a severe tank slappe r. Girard made
his way past leader Valley Racing's Brian Conely by the third lap and tried to stretch it out and
distance himseJf from the pack. Todd Harrington overcame a fifth-row-grid handicap, sliced
hi s way past th ree to four rid ers p er lap to
mount an aggressive attack on Girard for first
place but had to battle with Shawn Scholten and
a detennined Brian Conel y in the latter stages of
the race. Girard hun g on for the win with Harrington. Scholten, Conely and Wisconsin native
Pat Lamb finishing second through fifth, respectively .
