Georgie Price pushed his Moroney's Harley aro und Ronnie Jones for the last direct trans fe r spot. Greg Sims and Jame s H art also got by Jones, but all were headed to a semi. Canadian cu shion s p ecialist Chris Evans electrified the crowd as he rode the rim and pulled to a big lead in heat two . Unfortunately, as Evans exited tum two of lap four his Har ley spit its chain. Bret Beyer had been running se cond, until Evans' problem, then Coolbeth just blew past both riders. "I calmed down a little. I didn't w ant make a mistake; I · knew I had the Na tional made," said the Gardner-Walters Bros. Racing-sponsored Coolbeth. Beyer continued on in second on his Suburban H-D Harley . Aaron Hill led Tommy Colson and Larry Pegram on their way to the semi. Heat three was a dandy as Farris, Springsteen, Carr and Davey Camlin were locked in a battle for the lead, sometimes running three-wide. Farris held the point until the start of lap five when Carr wedged hi s way inside of Farris and took the lead for good. "I was trying to bide my time and wait for the opening," Carr said. " I tried to get the best run I could off four , then jus t drove it in deep into one." Farris kept hi s Winchester H D/Eddie Adkins-sponsored H arley a so lid second . Springsteen and Camlin continued their battle for a while until Springsteen pulled away. The las t heat w as all Parker's. "I wan ted th e h olesh ot, th en I just tried to follow m y own line," Morehead said . "I wasn't com fortable down low, so I tried up high, bu t that sucked too. I'm jus t glad to be in the National. SEMIS The first sem i had riders all over the track trying to find the best line, but it w as the I.M . Leathers / Amsoil-sponsored Chris Evans once again getting all the attention. Evans was back by the hay bales and flying as he moved from sixth to first by lap six. Greg Sims kept his Marine Transport Harley in second as the field freight trained by, but Terry Poovey brought his Gilco Harl ey home third. "Tha t was really a pretty reasonable start for me," Evans said. "I'm not much of a starter. There's only one place for me to ride and that's up top ." Kris Kiser led the second semi into tum one, but it was James Hart out front at the end of lap on e. Hart kept his F&S H-D /KK-sponsored mount out fron t until Roeder blasted by in tum three on his Mike 's H-D/Roeder H-D Harley. . "I wasn't making much time on the top," Roeder said. "When I switched to the groove I really made up ground on James. You can run on top for a few laps, but it goes away fast." Kiser held down third until just past the halfway point, when he left just enough room for the Mockbee-sponsored Jeff Eklund to slip a wheel inside going in to one. Eklund held on to move into the National. . Aaron Hill got his customary holeshot in the last semi, but it was Team Undo rider Brett Landes taking over at the halfway mark. Sacramento H-D's Hill held off Bartel 's Jay Springsteen while Ronnie Jones could only watch from a close fourth, just out of the main. "I kinda had a plan, but tum two was so rough I just played it b y ear mostly," Landes sai d. "1 tried both the top and bottom. I th ink I'll probab ly stick to the bottom, but 111 have to check my lap times with Sara (team owner Sara Goad) before I know for sure." NATIONAL Parke r got the holeshot he wan ted . and led Carr, Atherton, Roeder an d Farris around the first lap . Roeder took second on lap two as he blasted around the high side. Roeder made one hard charge at Parker, but came up short. "1 planned to ride about five laps up top then come down," Roeder said . "Bu t 1 w as gaining on Parker and thought if I could ju s t get by h im then (1 w ould) come down." Afte r Roeder and Carr had their problems the race for first was as good as over. Carr se t about methodically working his way back up from fifth to third . Morehead passed Coolbeth for sixth, then hooked up with Atherton to take fourth and fifth place past a fading Roeder. . "You just couldn't really race on this track," Morehead said . "The back straight and turns two and three needed to have a grader used on them. If you used the high line coming out of two it put you in the real deep stuff on the back chute. If you pinched it off and came out low, you lost all your momentum. Basically, you h ad to w ait for someone to make a mistake or you could pressure a mistake. I think a little grader work and w e could have a great race here for the fans." Th e storybook ending tha t Atherton w as loo king for ne ve r m aterialized. Af ter se tting fast times for ea ch race, Atherton was on the pole for the National, but changing track condition s doomed him . "We we re set up to ride the cushio n," At herton sa id. "And that was the fast line all day, until the National. We were jus t off a little. It was still fun. There was a go od crowd an d I th ink th ey got a good show ." Coolb eth put in an other solid ride for seven th over Evans, and Sp rings teen slipped around Landes on the last lap for ninth. Georgie Price had been as high as seventh, but slip ped down the ladder to finish 11th.
