(Left) Coli n Edwa rds II
won his third straight
AMA U.S. Superbike
National. (Below) Troy
Cor ser could do
nothin g but sit and
watch as Edwards
took th e win and
Jamie James took
over the
champion shi p po ints
lead.
er, Picotte and Du Hamel were on his
heels.
"They're go ing to check the bike to
m a ke s u re somethin g did n 't brea k,"
Corser explained. "1 did nothing differen t. I'd decided to sit behind Colin and
follo w him. I tipped it in and lost the
fro n t end. I' ve pulled a muscle in my
knee and my ankle and foot are getting
a bit sore."
Ed wa rd s, wh o was oblivious to the
happenings behind him, was long gone,
and for all practical purposes the race
for victory was over. The Texan pulled
aw ay until his lead reached double digits, then he slowed to eventually win the
third race of his superb ike career by
3.734 seconds.
"1'd swear up and down the race lasted for three ho urs," Edwards said later.
"The race at Brainerd we n t by so fast
because all yo u wan ted to do was get
out front. I thought Troy was on my ass
the whole time, but he'd crashed, unfortunately. I didn't know what was up.
Then the pit board said 'plus six, plus
sev en, plus eight.' Then I jus t sort of
kicked back and rode it, bu t then the
motor s ta rte d v ib rating, the footpegs
were falling off - not really, but you hear
every little thing when you 're out there
by yourse lf."
Jam es had other things on his min d,
most notably the cha mpionship. Still, he
was kept busy as Crevier moved by on
the eighth lap and proceeded to' pull
away.
That on ly lasted until the 11th la p,
though, as Crevier was high-sided from
his Muzzy Kawa saki in tum four. The
Canadian was transported to the hospital for X-rays , but fortunately his only
injury was a sprained ankle.
The ba ttle for second then became a
three-way affair as Sadowski, James and
.Picotte wen t at it. Sadowski took over
the position on the 12th lap with a brave
run through th e esses, but he had no
idea of his position. The New. Englander, who now calls Georgia horne, eventually succumbed to Picotte and Jam es,
th ough he says that would have been
different if he had kn own they were
fighting for second place.
"1 was looking at the pit board, but 1
was looking to see how many laps were
left because my knee was killing me ,"
Sadowski exp lained . "The board said
'Plus l' and it wa s staying- pl us one.
There wasn't anyone in front of me that .
I was catching so there was no sense in
going hard. If I kn ew 1 was in second
those guys would ha ve never got me but it's easy to say that after the fact."
