That's all changed, though, as the aftermarket piston company has gotten serious about their line of forged pistons and made an aggressive bid for their share of the motocross and off-road markets. A quick look down the starting line at any Na tional motocross will reveal more than just a few Wiseco stickers a do rn in g the bikes of the pros. Amongst those using Wiseco's Pro-Lite pistons in 1994 are Team Yamaha's Jeff Em ig and Mike Craig, Noleen's Larry Broo ks, Kyle Lewis and Larry Ward, privateer Jeff Maliasevich, and the en tire NCY and DGY teams. And it 's been a well-known fact that the aforementioned Yamaha riders have snared th e majority of the holeshots in '94. Just a coincidence? We had to know. Since Wiseco has been having the ir most-documented success with their Yamaha YZ line of pistons, we dec ided to try a pair out in out YZ125 and 250 test bikes. Wiseco does, however, manufacture a complete line of p istons for Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki motocrossers as well, and all boast the same features as the Yamaha units. So what makes a Pro-Lite piston different? The biggest obvious difference is that the Pro-Lite p iston is forged, not cast like a s to ck piece. Wiseco claims that a forged piston is stronger and wears better than a cast piston, and is also more resistant to skirt br eakage. Th e YZ250 piston kit is a full 30 grams ligh ter than a stocker, and as a res ult , Wiseco claims that it will rev quicker and provide smoother power. Th e YZ1 25 p isf on kit is 13.4 gram s lighter, and is claimed to provide similar results. The Pro-Lites feature a different cam gri nd sha pe, resulting in the piston's lower weigh t. On the tr ac k, w e were pleasantl y s u rprised b y th e performance g ai ns that the Pro-Lites yielded. Thou gh the slow-revving feeli ng of th e s tock YZ250 engine wasn' t eliminate d, we did notice that the powerplant d i d seem to rev a bit quicker. One of our dislikes about the stock 250 was it's reluctance to overrev, and the Pro'-Lite piston seemed to he lp in that area as well. Instead of fla ttening o u t in the higher RPM range, the Wiseco-kitted 250 continued to p ull w ell into the upper en d of th e powerband. Power gai ns on the YZ125 weren't as appare nt, si nce the s tock YZ 125 already revs qu ickly and p roduces an impressive amo unt of powe r. We d id notice t ha t t hr o t tl e r e sp ons e wa s im p roved, however, probably d ue to the P ro -Lit es lo w er w eight. Th e Wiseco-e q ui p p ed motor d id seem to rev a tad further than stock. XTREME X-LITE BELT Ask most rid ers, and th ey'll p robably tell yo u that a kid ney belt is a kid ney belt. Once in a while, however, you'll come across a savvy rider who has tried more than a few belts in search of the perfect fit, and they'll most likel y recommend one of the supporters that incorporates the orthoped ic be lt design. Unlike the standard elastic-with-ahard-plastic-or-foam-back-piece belts that have become the norm, a fewcorn- panies manufacture kidney belts that inco rporate dual elastic st raps on each side that focus the s u p p o r t on the rider's back, not his stomach. One of th ese such belts is the ne w X-Lite Belt from Xtrem e. Unlike many of the other orthopedic design belts , the X·Lite Belt is not overly-tall in the back section, and th e front of the belt is low in profile as well. The belt's straps are made of a so ft fabric that Xtreme calls Soft Tempo, and they are thin enough to be comfortable, yet thick enough to p rovide support . Two heavy-duty elas tic straps· on e on each side - stretch forward a n d secu re to the So ft Tem po straps via ho ok and loop fasteners. The elastic straps can be adjusted to p rovid e a littl e - or a lot - of support. Th e ba ck panel is equally as com · fortable. Un like many belts that have a stiff plastic piece that jabs into the top of yo ur butt, th e X-Lite Belt has a soft, pliabl e back panel tha t conforms to the natural curve of your lower back. Lots of vents keep you r back cool. . All in all, the X-Lit e Belt is one of th e mo st co m fo rtable, ye t fu nction a l k id n e y b elts we h a ve ever wo r n . Thanks to the d ouble-st rap d esign, it is possible to localize the belt' s p ressure and su ppo rt on yo ur bac k where it belongs, instea d of on your stomach. My brother and I have an ongoing joke about the "Flange Tes t" that all new kidney belts mu st undergo. After a long moto, most belts ·give-in to "be lly pr essu re" and are folded down as we pull off the track. A belt that passes the "Flange Test" will flip back up when we dismount , while a failing belt will stay folde d d own. So how did t he X- Li te Bel t fare in the " Fla n ge Test?" It d idn't eve n fold d own in the firs t place! The X-Lite Belt cos ts $46.95. Fo r m ore inform a t ion co n tac t Xtre me, Dept.
