"The ' 16' b ike was d efini tely going to finish behind the number ' 1' bike," the C a n ad ian s a id . ' Bo w ma n added, "I let Owen go by and 1 stuc k with him. " A lap later a nd Wenslo ff was up to second, dropping the helpless Higbee back. "I got out fron t ear ly and just kind of slipped back," Higb ee said . "I tri ed, to keep Moto Uberty in sigh t, but 1couldn 't, so 1just raced for the finish." Bow man came off the secon d place bik e at the 26-m inu te mark, Masahiro Iizuka taking ove r in fourth place as Weichel fou nd h imself r acing wit h Wensloff for the lead . The pa ir tou che d going into turn one, with Wensloff taking the point b efore Wei ch el took it b ack ' prior to the end of the lap. Weichel came in at the 33-min ute mark with Wensloff getting the lead as Bowman tookoff in pursui t, now on the '1' bike. . Because he was d rafted on to the team at the last min ute, Weichel didn't have a lot of time to set up the bike or get used to the Bridges tone slicks. He no rmally races on Dunlops. The bigger adj ustment was to the Brembo front brakes. "The brakes are really good, too good for me. 1 never really got used to them," Weichel'sa id. As for his strategy, Weichel said he wanted to make sure he brou ght it in cleanly. "I wasn't going to go ou t there and throw it into the h ay bales . 1 didn't really push the bike hard. 1 neve r had to go real fast." He left that to Bowman, the Floridian carving his way through the pack rapi dly. The only s light problem Bowman had was adjusting to the d ifferent machinery. "Owen and 1 set up the number '1' bike. The brakes were a little bit different. The first couple of laps 1 had to tigh ten them down," Bowman said. Race leader Wensloff pitted at the 38minute mar k, an d Ha nse n got back out just in front of the qu ickly closing Bowman, who was by in a flash. With abou t 20 minu tes to go, Bowman was in the lead for good an d pulling away at almost two seconds a lap. "Jamie is obviously the endurance animal here this weekend ," Weichel said of his teamma te in the w inner's circle. "I went out and took the lead and he pulled me along . He brought it home." With less than 15 min utes to go, Z3mpach was up on Hansen taking the lead just after turn one. A lap later and he had close to a six-second margin on Hansen, whose lap times were ten-seconds slower than Wensloff's. Stu Morrison had the Team Red Baron Honda in fifth and that's the way the top five wo uld finish. a Sears Point Internallonal Raceway Sonoma, California Results: August 20, 1994 M IDDLEWEIGHT TEAM CHA LLENGE: 1.
