Josh Larsen was th e bes t of the best at Gle n
Helen Speedway, posting a win in the Scratc h
main event, while Den n is Briggs collected a
Handicap main victory.
After four rounds of scratch racing, Charlie
Venegas was the high point man with IS .
Larsen. Bobby Schwartz and Mike Faria were
tied with 11 each; the racing had been that close
su evening.
Schwartz d rew the pole and Venegas the
outside, with Larsen and Faria in two and three,
respectively. Schwartz cut the best gate , but not
by much, as he and Larsen were inches apart
when they hit the first turn. Faria and Venegas
were also right there. Schwartz had ·the edge
coming out of tum two and was ahead at the
end of the first lap. But Larsen went to work on
lap two, looking to use every bit of power that
his engine could make. It was enough. and he
was able to put some daylight between himself
and Schwartz for the win. Faria also tried to get
by Schwartz, but the former two-time World
Pairs Champion didn't give him any chance, so
Faria settled for third. Venegas backed off and
finished fourth. Briggs scored a popular win in
the Handicap main, as he came fro m the 30yard-line and took the lead from Beau levandoski on the white-flag lap. Levandoski, who
had led the whole race, also had to bow to Greg
Ayers, and Larsen - wh o had come all the way
from the 8(}.yard-line .

Rich Gaydos led the Support main for two
laps, bu t Randy Evans, Jerry Cooper and Mitch
Hall got by and he soon found himself, looking
at exhaust from the back of the pack. They finished in that order.

Maybe you can call it beginner's luck, but Allen
Wen zel turned in a one-point ride to win the
Modern Classic Novice class during th e:
AHRMA /Brilish Bike Magazine National Trials
at Donner Ski Ranch.
Wenzel was ridi ng a n Ossa HAR that he
purchased two-weeks ea rlier, then cons tantly
repaired it on the fly during the Saturday trials
sc hoo l conducted by Englishman Mick
Andrews.
Wenzel's Single dab edged out Scott Chapman, whose two-point go was better tha n
third-place man We s Baker's ride aboard a
Bultaco Sherpa T. Wayne Sumner, another trials newcomer, ended up fourth w ith ni ne
points to beat La rry Warren. The two riders
were actually tied, but accord ing to AHRMA
rules, when there's an absolute tie, the oldest
rider wins.
The age rule was also used to determine the
Premier Heavyweight Expert win. Mike Atkins
took the victory making it three National victories in a row for the Noriel rider.
Jeff Naff was the class winner of the Modem
Classic Intermediate division, just as he was at
Sandhill Ranch in April . This time, Naff defeated Jeramie Tremain and Rick Doughty.
