(404) 934-7850. FAX (404) 934-3112 weekend . If the AMA decides to trim the racing down on their "race" weekends I ~ill seriously consider stayi ng home n:xt time. Ricky vs. Kevin In defense of Ricky Graham at the Sedalia Half Mile, I saw the race on MotoWorld but I knew it was B.S. be fore I saw it: When you pass someone on the inside, on the ~~)Ve, and they lean on you and then fall- It IS n~t rough riding, it's ignorance. I r~ally get tired of those sniveling Ha rley nders from Michigan protesting someone else whenev er they fall. Jay (Springsteen) would never do that. Dirt track racing, esp ecially half miles an d sh o rt track, is a contact s p ort. It al ways has been and it always will be. Grow up, Kevin Atherton! . Jim Foley Crockett, CA Fli pped Mr. Carruthers, have you flipp ed? I am ref erring to the Teardown (Issu e #30, Aupust 3) piece regardin g " too much " racmg at AMA road races. Let me see if I remember my history correctly: Formula On e, Pro Tw ins, three-h our endurance races, ~eat .races - all gone. And you say th er e IS. still too much racing? When I att~nd an AMA road race, I want to see raang. The more the better. I don't wan t to see tim ed practice where guys ride around for half an hour waiting to get a clear track for one hot lap. I want to see racing. If the AMA seriously thinks their progra m is too long, ma yb e they should attend a WERA weekend where racing is virtually non-stop. They regu la rly run over a dozen races a day, and I've never heard a sing le comp laint from the stands. I can understand the team owner s' concer~ over th e expense of ra cing. Shortening the event is not the answer. Motors blow and rid ers crash on the first lap, too. If they're that concerned, maybe we sho uld ~ll jus t buy paddock passes, tak~ some pictu res and go home. If there are Just too many events on the sched ule for so me people, they can come late or lea ve early . I ma ke sure my law n is mowed before I leave ho me. The closest venue for AMA road racing, Loudo n, is 400 miles from my home . Mid-Ohio is 500 miles. When I travel that far for an e~ent, spe nd mone y on hotels, food, race tickets and the like, I wan t as much for my money as I can jam into that Cycle New. Ste ven Calpino Doylestown, PA Dieter Klausing Folsom, CA Teardown II This letter is in regards to the article in the August 3 issue by Paul Carru the rs (Teardown, Issue #30). In reference to the AMA survey, I don't think pa yin g cus !omers are saying they wa nt less racing mstea~, they ~ant a qu icker -paced progra m (i.e get nd of winner's circle interv ie ws in which 20-25 people cro w d around the fence to view this while 30 000 fans wait 20 minutes for the next race): Yes, I think we should save the 600cc Supersport class for the obvious reason that many race fans own similar machines and can identify to this class. As a past associate sponsor of a top-10 enduranc e team, this cla ss deserves to remain a pa rt of the schedule. A Saturda y eve ni ng Midd lweight Team Challenge /Unlimite d Team Challenge race would not be all bad. There is plen ty of time before dark to ru n these classes separately. I do agree that something needs to be done about the Superbike teams using the. endurance race for practice. I do not believe this practice is safe or fair to the dedicated teams. If you s till need to pa re d own the schedule, drop the Mons terbike Shootout - a race that is very confusing to the average fan. The botto m line is this - having been a crew member at a few of th ese races, I can assure you that these folks wo rk very hard and many hard-eamed dollars have been spen t. And a few have sac rif iced thei r ma rriages and regul ar jobs to race the pres tigious AMA/ CCS Enduran ce Series. I think the AMA and Mr. Ca rru thers are too quick to cut this impo rtan t class. I just got my 1994 Isle of Man IT review in the mail today. It's a great tape - you should see th e F-l highlights. After watching "The 11th Milestone" - the title of the 1994 review tape - it brought back many memories, most of them good, and some sad. The Isle of Man is the greatest motorcycle race in the world . All race ~ans s~ould .see it once. A two-week stay, including arr fare, a private hotel room with private bath and two meals a day, g?es for about $2000 (not counting bar bills), and everything is free to watch. That's cheaper than one week in Daytona Beach! Your coverage of the Isle of Man and the Britten motorcycle wa s very good (Iss ues #26 and 27). I was disappointed tha t you didn't hav e a short piece on the d eta ils .o f Robert Dunlop 's crash; he ' s recovenng now, bu t the nerve damage to his leg is pretty bad. Also , you should h a ve sa id a few words about Ma rk Fanner, one of the best-liked IT racers and a ve ry ni ce ge n tle ma n, who wa s killed in practice. No, he never won a IT but if he had lived he wo uld have won an m?re than once and I C see him, in my mi nd, on the pla tform, sprayi ng champagne. He will be misse d by all of us. God speed, Mark. You r coverage of Vin ta g e Ra ci n g (I~sue #3~ , Au gust 10) with my three friends, Dick Mann, Jeff Smit h and Rick Dou ghty, was the greates t. Your incl usion of "Leaderboa rd" in each issue also lets me keep up on all forms of motorcycle racing. Thank you.
