Aug. 21 World Championship 250cc Motocross Series Round 13:Venezuelan GP YaN3pe MARACAY, VENEZUELA, AUGUST 7 ne we ek after his Budds Creek U.S. GP win, Fren chman Yves Demaria continued his incr ed ible run of success wi th another overall victory In the Venez uela n round. It was the Pepsi Honda rider's fifth win in six GPs, but is probabl y no t enough to earn him better than thir d in the series, having lost too many points d uring the first half of the campaign. Defending cha mpion Greg Albertyn won the first moto and finished fifth in the second to ex tend his lead in the s ta n d in gs to 13 p o in ts ov er Stefa n Everts, who was twice fourth at Maracay, about SO-tniles along the coast from the Venezuelan capi tal of Caracas. American riders had little joy at the race . Donny Schmi t missed the race after hurting a knee at Bud ds Creek, Tram pas Parker retired from both motos and Tallon Vohland could manage no better than seventh in each moto. The Latin American riders ap pe'lr to be imp roving slowl y but surely. They co uld not beat the Euro regu lar s, but e Costa Rican Ad rian Rober t at least stayed on the same lap as Albertyn for his first-moto point. £II: World Championship 125cc Motocross series Round 1 :British GP 0 By Geoff Meyer FOXHILLS, ENGLAND, AUGUST 7 merican Bob Moore all but clinched the 12Scc title by turning in one of his best rides of the year, with only one round remaining. Moore scored 1-2 mo to finishes to extend his points lead to 36 over Alessio Chiod i. Moo re nee ds only four more points at the final round, but when he won the first moto it looked like he tnight clinch the title in Engla nd . Ti tle contender Alessio Chiodi had finishe d a d isappointing fifth, and Moore needed onl y to finish ahea d of his Italian rival in moto two to sew up the crown. Chiod i rebounded to winrnoto two, however, and fini shed thi rd ov era ll on the"day. Former champ Davey Strijbos was the ru nne r-up with a 2-3 tally. Chiodi clocked the fas test tim e in quali fication, followed by Strijbos and Claudio Fed er ici. Moo re was back in sixth place. Qualifica tion meant nothing when the gate dr opped, though, although Federici entered the first turn ahead of Strijbos and Chiodi. Moore was seventh. Federici was enjoying a brilliant ride up front, but the same couldn't be said for Strijbo s, who dropped from seco nd to fifth. Chiodi was soon on Federici's rear whee l, and the leader didn't like it. He began rid ing erratically, first leaving the track an d then nearly crashing over a table jump. Chiod i made his move and took the lead , followed by a flying Frederic Vialle. Not to be outdone, Moore took Federici one lap later. This was when the moto came alive. Vialle was constantly pressuring Chiod i, but at the same time had to h old off the attacks of Moore. Strij bos joined the fra y after six laps. Vialle fin all y go t around Chiodi, and Moore follo we d suit and set out after the new leader. It didn' t take long for the Chesterfie ld Yamaha rider to start pressurin g Via lle, bu t the Frenchman was n't having an y of it. Vialle continued to block the American in the corner s A until Moore breezed by in the same section w he re he had passed Chiod i. A late-chargin g Strijbos passed Vialle for second before mote's end. "I we nt ou t to wi n - nothin g less," sai d a ha ppy Moore, who has three times finis hed a World Champions hip Series as the runner-up. "I' m taking one race at a time." Chiodi, on the othe r hand, sa w his title hopes dwindl ing, saying, "My con-' fidence is no t good, but I can't give in." Moore held third place into tum one in mot o two, trailing Chiod i and Vialle. The Ame rican quick ly passed Vialie and set his sigh ts on Chiod i, closing to the leader's rear wheel. A confrontation was expected, as Moore had accused Chiodi of costing him time a t the Du tch GP. "He stood on my bike after cu tting me off, so lowe him one," Moore had said. Moore's chance came after the two had battled for several lap s. Cha rging up a small straight on the back of the circuit, Moore kept his throttle wi de open until the last second, then moved to the insid e of the track and dove under Chi odi. The Italian tried the same tactic as in Holland, bu t this time Moore was ready. "I gave him a bit of a p ush, just so he wouldn't do it to me," sai d Moore . Chiodi came back, though, knowing that the title was on th e line . He rep assed Moore and d idn't give th e wou ld-be champ an other chance. The Italian now appeared to be in total command, while Moore began to make mistakes, admitting, "I go t a little out of shape a few times, and tho ught about last year ." (Moo re ha d fallen and in jured his ankle at last year's 2S0cc British GP, ending his season.) Havi ng finished second place three times , Bob Moore will most likely wrap up his 1 0ng-awaUed World title at the final 125cc ro und . Moore drifted w id e in a turn 'and began to fall back, leaving Chiodi to win the moto and retain a faint glimmer of ho pe going into the final round. Still, Chiodi was realistic: "It's really over. To win is nearly impossible, but I cannot just lay down." "I was getting very unti dy out there, so 1 just backed off for the points," said Moore. "I'm hap py I have another win, and I feel good ."
