Round 15: Denver Half Mile (Lell) Mike Hale (32 ), Larry Pegram (72) and Aaron Hili (17) did battle. Hill was seventh. Pegram eighth. Hale slowed with brake pro blems. (Below) Kevin Atherton (23) and Rodney Farris (92) were fifth and sixth, respectively. Parker took that chance on lap 20 and paid the price. While Davis and Jones stuck to the pole in tums three and four , Parker rode the edge of the groove and slipped into the marbl es. " I just got out in to the fuzzy stuff," said Parker. "After tha t, I just cruised her in." At the finish, Parker was nearly a full straight behind Davis and Jones, and an equal dis tan ce ahead of King. Well behind, King, Atherton, Farris and Hill finished in close succession. "I got a pretty bad start ..about 10th ..and I eventuall y closed in on Rodney and Kevin," said seventh-placed Hill. "After that it was follow the lead er . It was hard to pass u nless so me one made a m is.. take." "My wrist sta rted to hurt pretty bad laps, bu t that was because it was drag.. ging. Th en it we nt away completely, and 1had to lug it thro ugh the comers." After losing touch wit h Parker, King rod e a lonely race and finished a solid fourth. Parker, meanwhile, slowly but su rely close d th e gap between h imself and the two leaders, and by the 16th lap had made it a three-way battle for the lead . "I took a few laps to get things figured out, then 1 pu t my head down and reeled them in," said Parker. "I looked back and saw that there was no one behind me, so 1 figured it was time to take a chance and go for the pass." during the second half of the race," said Atherton. "I knew that Rodney was behind me, and after he got under me in the heat, 1 made su re to sta y down on . the bottom." "I couldn 't get the jump on him," said Farris . " I would about rear-end him in the mid dl e of the tum, but he could hook up better coming out. " Peg ra m fin ished alone in ei ghth, w hile Hernd on, Ca rr and Stump ra n nose-to-tail in ninth, lOth and 11tho Carr did everything he could to g e t past Herndon, but his passing options were limited on the groove. "My brakes started going away after five laps ," said Herndon. "Chris said he could smell them for the first four laps, then he didn't sm ell them any more. That's when they went away. After that 1 went straight to the bottom. 1 figured tha t if anyone was gonna pass me, they were gonna have to do it on top ." "Billy was hugging the pole, and the o nly way for m e to pass h im would have been to s t u ff him ," sa id Ca rr. "Tha t's not my style, and 1 wasn't gonna play that ga me. Sure, 1 lost some points to Parker, but all that does is mak e it a little less comfortable." a Rocky Mou ntain Speedway Denver, Colorado Results: Au gust 14 HEAT 1 (11 rid rrs, 10 bps. top 2 transferl: 1.
