Coolbeth continues to easily be the top ro okie on the championship trail. Landes patiently worked his wa y to 10th. "This turned out not to be one of our better nights," said Landes. "Everything was really working in the heat, but the track really changed between then and the National. It felt so good in the hea t, but I was lost in the National." After a good start Springsteen faded to 11th. "1 got off pretty good, then I was following some guys th at w ere al most falling all over," sa id Springsteen. " I'd get a good drive going, then it would look like someone was going to bail in front of me. I'd back off, then nothing happened. I lost my rhythm after that. When the green ligh t flashed it was the fa milia r orange and black p aintscheme of the factory Ha rle ys' leading the parad e with Parker at the helm. But on lap th ree, Parker almost lost his front end in tum two, and while he wa s gathering it u p, Carr scooted b y. The lead positions were set for many laps, as Parker stalked Carr and made token char ges in tum two, while King he ld th ird over Farris, Hill, Coolbeth, Springsteen, Jo nes, Dav is, Morehead and Stump. . As steady as the two leaders were in their po sitions, the rest of the field wa s constantly changing. Farris and H ill dropped King to fifth. By the halfwa y point, Da v is was slow ly narrowing the gap, a n d i t seemed like he would surely reel them in. But, about five laps fro m the en d, Da vis al most pitched it away in turn two. He somehow recovered and maintain ed third. "Man, I'm just glad to be alive," said Davis. "1 thought I'd lost it for sure. The rear jus t stepped out. Coming from row two , I'm happy with third." Morehead worked his wa y stead ily through the field to finish fourth when he dropped Farris to fifth on lap 21. "It was really working pretty well , bu t Will just got through traffic fast er than 1 did," said Morehead. "We had to work around a lot of people to ge t to where we did finish ."
