McElroy snags Silver State
Motocross wins
By Joan Tiearne y
CARSON CfIY NY, jUtY22
,
Big Valley Honda rider Al McElroy top ped the
. Vet Pro class on Fr id ay night at th e On Trac
I Eve n ts-pro mo te d motocross action at Silver
I Stat e Raceway.
McElroy was untou ched in the Vet Pro class
with two holesh ots a nd two perfect motes. Off
the gate McElroy pull ed out front, ah ead of Big
Valley Honda owner Rich Thorwaldso n, as well
as Allen Berluti , Jon Varn er and Rod Ginn . The
Su zuk i-m ounted Berluti q uickly passed Thorwaldsen and ch ased dow n Mcfilroy, Berluli
seemed to catch McE lroy in th e corners bu t
could n't quite get a w heel under h im in the
st raigh ts. The two ride rs battled lap after lap
w ith Berluti almost passing McElroy more than
a few times. The wh ite-flag lap proved to be a
tense one as the two riders rode neck and neck
th rough th e whoop se ction and around the
tower turn , but McEl roy h ad the m omen tum
and sailed his Ho nda over the finish line for the
win .
Mota two was much the same wi th McElroy
out front from the start . Berluti was running in
seco nd w ith Stu art Vogel an d Thorwaldson in
pursuit. McElroy an d Berluti seemed to pull
away from the pack as the rest of the field had
their ow n race goi ng for third place. On lap
fou r, Vogel made a beautiful pass on Berluti,
taking away the seco nd posi tion an d any hope
that Berluti had for an overall win over McElroy,
.who con tin ue d to do mina te the race lap after
lap . Vogel charged hard to catch McElroy bu t to
no avail. McElroy took the mota win and the
ove ra ll victory. Berluti was second overall .
Vogel captured thi rd, suffering from a bad first
mo ta . Fourth p lace went to Thorwaldson, and
Rod Ginn was fifth.
