Round 11: Sedalia Half Mile for'it. Everything was really wo rking and I was fast enough, bu t I was last into tum one," said Carr. "I worked my way up to tha t long string of riders, but 1 would have had to ba ng riders to get muc h more." Other than Hill and Davis exchanging fifth several times , the positions were se t until that crucial 23rd lap . With Atherton down, Graham rode alone in third on one cylinder when one of his plug wires carne off. Hill was n ow fourth, as Da v is h a d slipped off the groove one too many times and dropped all the way to 10th. "I w as working so hard on Aaron, and I got by a couple of times, but the last time I got off the groo ve and everyone just got under me because I couldn't get back in line," said Davis. Camlin w a s a n o th er rid er ab le to m ake a s mall m ove to the front, an d ended up with fifth. "Th at's great - it's o u r best fi ni sh since DuQu o in. I' m happy, the bike was wo rking great," said a smiling Carnlin. Pegram 'ro d e th e whole ra ce in the mid d le of that tigh t string of riders. "I'm real happy w ith our first ride on the new bike. It handled grea t and a sixth the first time out - well, I'd cons ider that a success. " King, who makes the swi tch between Honda and Harley-Davidson easier tha n anyone, raced th e Garvis Honda to eighth. Davis was n int h, w hile Landes was the caboose on the Hill train. Poovey topped a race-long battle with Hart and Fletcher and ended up 11tho After Atherton limped horne in 15th, he immediately went to the start/ finish line and lodged a protest with the AMA against Graham for rough rid ing. 0\1 (Hon); 4. Sedalia Half-Mile State Fair Speedway, Sedalia, Missouri Results: July 23, 1994 (Top - left to right) Ronnie Jones, Stave Morehead and Ricky Graham enjoy their company in winner's circle. (Above - left to right) Thlrd-placed Matt Walt, runner-up SCott Stump and winner Georgie Price celebraled after the 883 NatIonal. It was Price's flrst-ever National win. res tart, bu t Johnson suffered a severely broken leg. The third try was mo re successful, as Price led St ump o ff th e line. On lap th ree, Stu mp rode hi s Wimer's Cycle Spo rtster into the .lead. "I knew I could win, it was just a matter of being patient. Whe n Geo rgia bobbled in tu m three it opene d the door an d I jus t went by," said Stum p. "Scott was fas ter th rough thr ee and four. He just went right on by . 1 could stay with him but I couldn't really challenge," said Price. One ride r on the move was Matt Wait, aboa rd a Mitchell's Modesto H-D moun t. "I was able to use a low line in one and two. There's quit a bit of moisture down there and I was able get by several guys down there. Otherwise, you just ha d to force your way by entering the tu rns ," said Wait. The race was red flagged for the las t time on lap ten as Paul Morgan , who had been running eighth, crashed with Doug Beattie. The "race" was called complete at the nine-lap mar k. NATIONAL Obviously, the start was all-important on a track that was very ha rd to pass on. Jones had first p ick and looked to start in the second slot from the outside. Jones, Morehead and Atherton charged in to tum one first, but it was Morehead in the lead at the end of lap one. Morehead and Jones quickly pulled away. Ather ton, Pa rker, Hill, Gra ham and Davis w ere stringing out behind. Graham got by Hill on lap four and ran down Par ker. Hill wa s sixth and the engineer of a six-rider train. "I was not going to leave that groove. They were going to have to work to get by, " sai d Hill. " Will was probably faster, in fact he got by a couple of times, bu t ea ch tim e h e slipp ed eno ugh to let me bac k by. I just kept ' plugging along and it carne out pretty welL" After Jones took the lead, he couldn't shake Morehead, but both p u lled well ah ead of the following swarm . "I felt I was faster than Steve when I was behind him , but a lot times, it's easier to follow than to lead. There wasn't mu ch room to pass," said Jones. "I lost the front end in three and it started to fold un der, by the time I go t it gathered up Ronnie was by me," said Morehead. Atherton was hold ing a steady third over Parker and Graha m. "I was looking for a way around Kevin, trying different lines, bu t couldn' t make anything happen," said Par ker. Hill's train ha d now grown to eight ride rs, as he led Davis, Pegram, Stump, Camlin, Carr, King and Landes. At the half way point, Parker suddenly slowed. "I t was just a flat tire, one of those things," said Parker, but it dropped the title contend er to last p lace. One lap later, Stump suffered the same fate. Graham w as n ow clear to close on Atherton, and he did. After sufferin g a horrib le start, Carr wa s m o ving up.
