four , Joe Kopp passed Strode for fourth, then a lap later went by Stanley for third. As soon as Kopp had passed Stanley, a five-rider crash involving Yamamoto, Wincewicz, Hiatt, Trulson and Carver brought out the second red flag of the race. Lots of repairs were made during the 15 minute delay that followed . On the single-file restart, Annen was out fast ahead of Fay, Joe Kopp, Strode and th e rest, bu t Simonsen and Wincewicz crashed on the first lap and bro ught out yet another red flag. Simonsen was slow to get up, but signaled that he was okay. Again, a lengthy delay for repairs followed. Of course, Annen led the way on the restart, but this time Fay snuck past and into the point. "Jeff must have bobbled or missed a shift going into tum one, because that was just the open door I was waiting for," said Fay. Once in the lead, Fay rode his Paul Peiroli Racing/Downtown H-D/Maxirna/Pro Sports/Bell/Vince Holt/Scott USA/Hinshaw'S Honda/Farding Racing/Jim Roseth/Works Performance/ Hoffman Engine Dynamics/Lester's Machine/Joe McCoy /Dirt Track Number plates/ Tom Houseman-Rotax to an easy win. The crowd went wild as Fay began to pull away . At the halfway point, Fay was 30 yards ahead of Annen, Kopp and Stanley. Stanl ey went around the outside of Kopp several times , bu t was never able to make a pass stick. With five laps to go, Fay was crossing the finish-line area when Annen and the rest were barely working their way through tum four. Fay held a single finger in the air as he raced past the white flag. and went on to score the win ahead of Annen, Kopp and Stanley. "I'm really excited, but Orris Carr is still the best - he's phenomenal," said a humble, ye t excited Fay, after the race . "If he'd have been here, he would have made enough points to clinch the title even if I won. That's racing tho ug h. I know Orris will be happy for me, he's a cool guy."
