Brent Herber (Han). By George Hodkinson MAZEPPA, MN,jUlY4 Rob Engstrom was one of the fastest riders on the day at the Hurricane Hills MX facility, taking the 250cc A dass win with 1-2 moto scores. The Open A class was run in conjunction with the 250cc A class, and Scott Steinle used his displacement advantage to put Honda 500 into the lead with 250cc A riders Rob Engstrom, Jason Kempel and Chris Bense in tow. The pack remained in that order until the second lap when Engstrom snuck his lighter 250 to the inside of Steinle as Bense crashed and remounted in the back of the field . At the finish it was Engstrom with Steinle crossing the line second, but first in his class, and Kempel third, lQ-seconds behind the leaders. Bense moved back into fourth by mote's end, • The second moto had a different outcome as the 250's were quicker to the first comer. Kempel took the holeshot with Bense, Engstrom, and Steinle behind him. Bense was determined to make up for his bad luck in the first moto as he quickly displaced Kempel in the early part of lap one . Dense was able to build a lead as a battle waged behind him between Engstrom and Kempel. Engstrom was dosing the gap on Kempel lap after lap by jumping a 9{}-foot double that less than a handful of riders could negotiate. On lap four, Engstrom utilized his acrobatic skills and launched past Kempel. Engstrom couldn't do the same to catch Bense as Bense was doing the double. At the checkers, it was Sense avenging his first-moto woes with a five-second lead on overall winner Engstrom, who held an even larger advantage over Kempe l. Results MICRO MIN1: 1. Brown defends Ohio State Speedway title By Kevin George S.CANTON, all, JULY 9 Scotty Brown topped his third-straight Ohio State Championship Speedway crown at Bear Creek Speedway with perfect scores through five heats and the four-race championship runoff. Brown rode his Oury Grips/Shoei Helmets / JT Racing/K-N Filters/Blendzall/Lou's LeatherslJustice Brothers/Terry Cable/Alpinestars-backed Jawa to dominate some otherwise close racing. Going into the final round of heats, eight riders still had a chance to make the championship run-off. Polish riders Sobek and Bogden Muszynski were the only non-Ohio riders still in contention. The Muszynski's were matched up with each other in their final heat along with Bear Creek regular john Busler and Dale Wakefield. Bogden needed to take the win with Sobek in second to force a four-rider run-off for the fourth spot in the championship run-off, but it was Sobek who led the field to the checkered flag. Randy Gutshall came out of a two-year retirement like he hadn't missed a beat and went into the third round of heats with two wins under his belt. Gutshall wanted to keep a perfect score and forced a last-lap mo ve on leader jeff Tretera that put both riders down. The move would end up costing Gutshall a place in the championship. Even with another w in and a runner-up to Brown, Gutshall came up one point shy and had to settle for a fifth-place tie with Mark Maurer, who ha s been the rider to beat on regular nights. Two heat win s, two runner-ups and a third place finish kept Maurer ou t of the show by one point. Qualifying with Brown (15 po int s) for the championship run-off were Sobek Muszynski along with Tretera and Kevin Smith, each with 12 points. These three took turns chasing Brown across the finish line in each race. If not for the fact that the final race occurred at I a.m. the fans probably would have pressed for a run-off, but it seemed fitting to allow the second place threeway tie among Tretara, Smith and Muszynski to stand. In flat track action. Wakefield climbed off his speedway bike long enough to top the Knobby class. Newcomer Robert Brown topped the Open class while his son Joel Brown took the Youth division. A super three-way battle up front in the Flat Track Lite div ision saw Dan SACRAMENTO, CA,JULY 10 Curtis Roberts extended his win -streak to four in a row by winning the Expert Supersport dass in round five of the Northern California Mini Road Racing Association's championship series at Prairie City Raceway . Team Calamari's Logan wilke came from the outside of row one to lead the field down the long start straight and into the carousel tum one. After the first few comers, the pack headed onto the back straight with Roberts tucking right into Wilkes draft, while Bob Vizcarra gave chase in third with Scott Campbell and Steve Foster close behind. By the beginning of lap two , the leading duo . of Wilke and Roberts were starting to pull away from the others while Vizcarra was also putting some distance between himself and Campbell. But behind the lead group came the battle for fifth, which included Foster, Graham, and jon Edwards, who entertained themselves by constantly swapping positions. At the halfway mark, the leaders held a fivesecond cushion over third-place Vizcarra, who was having intermittent engine troubles and found himself coming under attack from Campbell . As the race wore on, Wilke and Roberts traded faslest-laps between them and continued to up the pace . Suddenly, Wilke got loose exiting the hairpin and Roberts dove underneath to take the lead. At nearly the same time, Vizcarra crashed while trying to overtake Campbell entering the esses, moving Foster into fourth. Vizcarra quickly remounted and charged back after Campbell. At the finish it was Roberts with the win , followed by Wilke, Campbell, Vizcarra, and Edwards. Results STK: 1. Bob Vizcarra (Yam); 2. Bob Wilke (Yam); 3. Jim Guerf'erlII(Yam). SS: 1. Leivan lands Tebbitts HS win By Arlene Hejlek TEBBITTS, MO, JULY 10 Steve Leivan made it two wins in a row when he topped the 145-rider field and claimed the overall trophy at the seventh round of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Series hosted by the Show Me Motosports club. Leivan took the holeshot and pushed hard for the first few miles on the eight mile course trying to shake Leigh Letellier . Letellier gave no quarter, however, and the two of them pulled away from the pack while waging a race-long battle for the lead as they switched places numerous times during the tw o-hour even t. Letellier grabbed the lead going into the . sixth and final lap when Leivan pitted for fresh goggles, but Leivan used a line he had been sav ing for just such an occasion and was once again out front . Letellier's ac e in th e hole turned out to be a bike in the hole when· he launched off a nat rock through the gnarly creek in an attempt to pass and landed th igh deep in water. Leivan then cruised his Answer/Pro Circuit/ Acerbis/Fredelle Racing/RK Chain/Surd yke Racing/Sprocket Specialists/Camelback/M ike's Machine/Scoll/BelllJeff City Cyde / Silkolene-backed Yamaha to the finish for overall honors. Letellier managed to get going in time to daim second overall and first " place Expert . Third overall was Chris Caplinger, , who fixed a problem with the air box on his ATK at the end of the second lap but was too far behind to catch the leaders. On the first lap, Terry Gilliland survived an altercation with a pig on the trail and went on to battle with Caplinger in the late stages of the race, coming in on Caplinger's tail for the fourth-overall po sition. Fifth overall went to Intermediate class winner Mike Stahlman, who scored a wire-to-wire win in that class. Results · 0 1A : 1. Stev e Leiva n (Yam) : 2. Leigh Lete llier (KTM): 3. Pellett TROY, OH VlO ,JUL F&S Suzuki's Chuck Reed was the man in charge of the 12SccA dass at Kenworthy's sponsors' day motocross. Reed settled for second behind the Kawasaki of Josh Steel in the 250cc A class, but the Lightweight Pro class was all Reed's. The first moto had a Suzuki holeshot sweep as Reed, Lenny Baker and Blane Armbruster jammed around the first tum heading for the Kramer memorial tunnel jump. Reed jumped out to establish a lead on his fellow Suzuki pilots as fourth-place Dale Spangler was applying the pressure to Armbruster for third. By lap two Spangler had worked his way around Armbruster and Baker, and began reeling in Reed. Halfway through the third lap, Spangler caught Reed and tried to outjump him through the notorious "Dirty Dozen." Spangler came up short and seemed a little - shaken when he cased-out on the third jump of the~o~ . Reed took advantage of Spangler's miscU or and cruised in for the win . Spangler regrouped for second with a spectacular josh Demuth fly· ing his Yamaha into third place. The second 12SccA moto saw another Suzuki holeshot as Lenny Baker took the lead with Annbruster and Reed right on his tail. Reed took little time to send Armbruster into third and began hammering on Baker's door, By lap three, Spangler had charged in to third place, dragging young josh Demuth with him for fourth. Reed finally got by Baker halfway through the moto, and then it was Spangler's tum to get by as he took second place from Baker. A lap later, josh Demuth decided he didn't want to be left behind, and he got by Baker for third as Bakel settled in for fourth ahead of Armbruster, AI the finish line it was Reed with the lead follow ed by Spangler, Demuth, Baker and Armbruster in fifth. 0 Results MICRO: 1.
