Schwartzups record at Costa Mesa Speedway By Scott Roussea u Photo by Jim Thorn "B COSTAMESA, CA, JULY 8 oogaloo" Bobby Schwartz may not have known tha t he alrea dy held the record for most wins in the Coo rs Lig ht Fa ir Derby a t Costa Mesa Speedway, but that didn't stop the former two-time Ll.S, National Champion from takin g another title in the prestigious event. Schwartz, who has won the coveted Fair titl e th ree times before - in 1978, 1990 and 1993 - wa s tie d w it h Brad Oxl ey and Charlie Veneg as on seven points after the three qualifying rounds, while Mike Faria, a two-time winn er of the Fair Derby, led all scorers with eight. All four riders eas ily qualified for the Fair Derby main event in the ir respective semis and would be joined by Brent Werner. In th e Hand icap main, w hi ch wa s run prior to the Fair Derb y, Schwartz served notice to the competition that he was in top form, as he bolted off of his 4O-yard-line perch and took the 'lead on the first lap with Oxley and Gary Hicks h ound in g h im . Both Schw a rtz a n d Oxley quickl y pulled away from the pack to settle the eight-lap race between themselves, with Schwartz pulling close to the pole to fend off the 1987 National champ . But Schwartz was having difficulty staying low enou gh in turns three an d four to fend off Oxley's relentless attacks, and he yielded to Oxley on lap thr ee. From there, Oxley had only to use the same tactic, pole-putting to victory aboa rd his Russell Racing /Cirello Raeing / NJK Leathers/Gary Hicks/ Internationa l Speed way-backed Weslake over . Gary Hic ks and Robert Pfe tzi ng after Sch wa r tz dropped to the re ar of the field, unable to hold the low line. As the Fair Derby finale was brought to the line, the momen tum wo uld appear to have shifted to Ox ley, who was in the hunt for his first Fair title. But after Venegas was ejected from the race for breaking the tapes from his gate five startin g pos it ion, the start fell to Sch wartz, w ho immediately d ropped low again on the slick Costa Mesa surface as .the riders hit turn one. Oxley mad e a poor gate from his pole starting position but was able to salvage second over Faria while Werner tailed off last. Oxley pr essured Sch wa rtz for all four laps, but Schwartz was better prepared to deal with the groove this time, as he gui ded his Harley-Da vidson of Westminster/Bell Helmets /Jack Jarboe /Troy Lee / CTi / Silkolene / Quicksilver-su pported Weslake to the li ne ahead of Oxley, securing his fourth Coors Light Fair Derby title. Oxley held second over Faria and Wern er. "I wasn't comfortable in the Handicap ma in be cause the track wa s a bit slick. I had to lower the gear to sta y on the pole, and Brad was the one who told me to change it," Schwartz said. "I never eve n knew I'd won th ree of ' em (Fai r Derbies) until they announced it."
