The section the n went back. down the rock face and turned 180 degrees to a six-foot sheer rock-face climb with a short approach that was loose so il and rocks. It was on this rock face that Winters was ab le to make a d iffere nce betw een himself and Brinkwart. Winters dropped a tota l of eig h t poi n ts in th is section, wh ile Brinkwart a nd Arnold dropped 13 and 15 po ints, respectively. The Adva nced cla ss saw Mall Hughson sound ly bea t his closest competitor, David M: Reed , wit h a score of 79 points to 100 points. Section five was where Hughson beat Reed, which was the second section in a d ouble or contin uous section that featured many tu rns on the rolli ng sidehill and fmished with a rocky hilld imb. The Intermed iate Class winner was Charlie Ca min wi th 49 points. Close beh ind in second _ place was David Knapp with 54 points. Section six was tight for the Intermediate riders; man y foun d it hard to get set up for the obstacles in that section. Konkol ju m ped ou t to an early firs t-mo te lead fo llo w ed by J. Er ickson a n d Lee Sa ul. Erickson closed to wit hin strik ing d ista nce of Konkol and wo uld hound the leader for the next few laps, looking for a place to pass. With a couple of laps remaining, Konkol was able to sha ke Erickson and pull out a two-tum advan tage by the time the black and white flew. Saul nailed th e seco nd- mote holesh ot, but Konkol and Erickson quickl y reel ed him in to make it a three-way battle for the lead. Erickson used an in side line af ter the Kal-Gard Tower jump to m ove past Sa ul and run o u t fron t. Konko l zapped Saul a tum later to move h im back to third . Erickson and Kon kol pu lled away from the others as they fou gh t for the top spot. A lap later, Erickson and Konkol tried to occupy the sa me line a t the sa me time and ende d up in a pile on the grou nd . Saul found him self in the lead once again. Sau l's lead was sho rt-liv ed, h ow ev er, as Konko l made a sp ee dy recove ry and drov e around Saul in a corner a lap later. Erickson followed suit with a pass on Saul in the following tum for second place. Konk ol then p icked up the pace a notch and p ulled dear of Erickson to take the checkered flag with 10 seconds to spa re. Erickson held on for second over Sau]. Garlin, Kretschner co-champions at Ocala Vintage Motocross By Kyle Myers OCALA, n, JUNE26 Ed Carlin and Matt Kretschner battled down to the wi re and tied for the series champions hip wh en the Florida Vintage Motocross Club held th eir fina l eve n t of the sea son at the Flo rida Motosports Comp lex. En tering the race for the 2S0/5OOcc Mas ter class, Kretschner held a slim six-poin t lead ove r Garli n. In the fir st mot o, Ga rli n gr abbed th e holeshot and never looked back, taking the win over Kretschner and narrowing his lead. The chase for the title wo uld corne down to the final moto . To earn the title, Kretschner had to win ; if Garlin won an d Kre tschner was sec ond , they would tie for the title. Garlin again go t the sta rt, but Kre tsc hne r was on his rea r fend er. Late in the race, Ga rlin .p ulled away to take the moto and ove rall win, while Kretschn er finished second ahead of Kim Burrows. Garlin an d Kret sch ner w ere subs equ en tly crowned co-champions at the event. A suppo rt class was run in conjunction with the vintage race. Fourteen riders lined up in the first moto, with Fred Smith nailing the holeshot over Mike Mims, Kyle Myers and Philip VanBaelen. Myers passed Mims in the second turn, b u t Sm i th, o n a larger 250cc mac hine, had op en ed up a fou r-seco nd lead on Mye rs, w ho was on the only 125cc machine in the class. Pos i- tions stayed the same, with Smith taking the win ov er Myers, A llen Draheim,VanBaelen a nd Robert Fulton. Smit h again found himself in fro nt to start moto two with Vanbaelen, Myers and Draheim giv ing ch ase. Mye rs p ow ered by Va n Baelen halfw ay into the opening la p, but Smith had ope ned up a five-second advantage and went on to gree t the checkered flag first. McQuistenflies at ~and Hill IT By Roger Lino BRENTWOOD, CA JUNE 24 , After several runner-up and third -place finishes , Ch ris ten McQuisten finally put it together for the overall win in the (}.20Occdass at Sand Hill Ra nch 's T.T.M ara th on Frid a y night su m mer se ries. McQuisten showe d wh at stead y rid in g and stayi ng in shape do will for you in this type of event with come-fro m-beh ind wins in both of the half-ho ur motos. In moto one, it looked a t first that Roy Rose and Justin Burr were going to walk away with it when they shared the holeshot at the start and were putting a good d istance between themselves and the field, while McQuisten was stuck back in the pack du e to a ba d s ta rt. But th is young lady was d etermined to come away wi th the win , a nd she proved that old saying abo u t marathon racers that its not w ho's out first, but who's first at the end. As time wore on, McQuisten put on a fine display of riding ab ility and determination to not only catch the leaders and ' pas s them both, but then lap the w ho le field, with the execep tion of Rose and Bur r, for the win in the first moto. In moto two , Rose got the holeshot aga in, but thi s time Will ie Sig narowitz was second. McQuisten got off to another bad start, but just as in the first rnoto, she kept up her steady style . and again picked the leaders off one by one to finally come ou t on top for her first overall win. In the 2SOcc class, Jerry Brandt, who has pu t away more wins tha n any other ride r with the excep tion of Cra ig Christian, claimed yet another one.
