Cadalora, Chandler • surprise 12 Th ings changed 'somewhat in Italy. For the last four races, Kevin Schwan tz had been the only person able to challenge Michael Doohan and his Honda, and when the Texan was injured at Assen it seemed Doohan must stand alone. Now the Australian was pushed to th ird on the grid by rank outsiders Lu ca Cadalora (right) and Doug Chandler. To be fair, there were only hundredths in it, and as Doohan said: "I feel as though the whole front row is on pole." But the sudden ascendancy of Cadalora from the doldrums was nonetheless most unexpected. He had been on pole in Japan four races ago, and not on the front row since then. Cadalora, serenely calm as ever, attributed it to a package of improvements: the new frame working well, ditto for a new batch of Dunlops, and the engine also having woken up from a long sleep because of new cylinders and pipes cooked up by team technical guru Bud Aksland. There were also unconfirmed reports that the team had changed fuel (allegedly Elf, instead of their American Sunoco brew). For Cadalora there was also the fact that his left-hand injury was much better, with the stitches r em oved. "The only problem was I collapsed on Friday night - I think I must have drunk something too cold::' Afte.r tha t, he was ill all night. ~,'Anyway, Dr. Costa put me on a drip before practice, and now I feel fine." 'tk , . , Even greater \vas the ,s urprise at the 'perforrriance of Chandler, well off form ever since crashing heavily at Mugello a year ago. Mugello is Cagiva's test track , and Chandler has a lot of miles here, especially in recent weeks. Even so, nobody expected the laid-back American to make such a leap from near the back of the works bikes, and always behind teammate John Kocinski, to be Kaz u to Sakata (Ap r); 3.
