The cove rage of the American event in the World Trials Championship is reduced to two inches of copy in the In the Wind sec'-tion? ! Where are the pictures? Where is the story of the amazing riding that took place at this event? Where is the story about how only two or three riders even ma de it thro ugh section seven - the one with th e six-foot, v ertical rock face? Wh ere is the story of how Jess Kemkes and Ma tt Miller, tw o Ame rican rid er s just ou t of hi gh sch ool, cam e out and impressed the fans as well as the other rid ers? Where is the sto ry of Kip Webb, the only guy to ride the event who also rod e in the '82 round - also held at Donn er? What happened to Cycl e N ew s' increased tria ls cove rage? Oh the humani ty! WERA challenge Wh in in g abou t the state o f National Ch ampionship road racing has reac hed new prop ort ions th is year. The riders, tea m ow ners, th e sfonsors an d th e motorcycle media al ha ve their co mplain ts: the cost, safety, rules, insufficien t prize money, scheduling, WERA, AMA, lack of sponsorship, lack of TV, etc. The WERA Pro Series will launch the EBC Brakes Triple Crown on Jul y 22 at Indi an ap olis Racewa y Par k. The Triple Crown addresses many of the sp ort's problems. The Tripl e Crown is unprecedented in American motorcycle racing in awarding teams as well as riders prize money. The Triple Crown will payout about $90,000 to riders in Motoport Formula USA and Goodridge Formula II classes. The topplacing teams in these three events will be paid an additional $35,000. And although no race tra ck can eve r be considered completely safe, WERA Pro Series has replaced Pocono w it h Ind ianapolis Racewa y Park on th e Triple Crown schedule in an effort to make the racing safer for the riders. The Triple Crown and WERA Pro Series, in general, has strong sponsorship, advertising and TV coverage. This sponsorship and adve rtising affords WERA Pro Series the opportunity to pay good prize money a n d a ttract ·large spectato r turnouts. More sponsors and more spectators mean more money for riders and teams - tha t is, as long a s qu ality teams and riders race to p rovide a quality sho w . Those w ho d on' t participat e in th is year ' s Trip le Crown really have little room to complain. Their lack of particia tion will help ensure th a t the probF.ems with N ational Cha m pions h ip mo torcycle road racing will continue. The Triple Crown is a real opportunity for motorcycle road racing and everyon e involved. Those teams, riders, spo nsors a nd m ed ia p eop le wh o are involved w ith the Triple Crown can take pride in being part ofthe solution. Doug Gonda WERA Pro Series Truckee,CA As you can no doubt tell from the 13 references to WERA ProSeries and Triple Crown, Gonda is afJiIiated with the WERA Pro Series and it s promotion of th e T riple Crown throughhis company Proiac, Inc...Editor . Stop the sniveling I, I am w riting in reference to the mini article on Rich Ol iver and the "unobtain abl e" p arts for h is Yamaha TZ250 ("Parts is parts " - Issu e #24). If there are problems, the y don 't lie with Rich Oliver. He is doing wha t everyo ne e lse shoul d b e d oin g - he is tes ting every combo and setup he can find in an effor t two w in a ch a m pions hi p. There ain 't nu thin' w rong wit h that. Don 't ex pect h im to sha re w it h everyone his p art icular se tu p or parts supp lier. That is for the rest of us to figure out on our own. And don't think he gets p referen tia l treatment either - I have seen Rich rid e the wheels off stuff o thers w ould n' t w alk n ear. Why ? Because he's a racer and he ha s the great d esire to win : he w orks hard at it. Nick Ienatsch said quite eloquently at Loudon that the AMA 250cc Grand Prix cla ss ne ed s to look more profess ional. Well, he's right. We ha ve a blueprint Oli ver's ope ration. It's not -perfect, but · it's on the right track. As far as "u n obtain ab le " p arts are concerned, Rich has ridden for and worked with some of the best and brigh, est people in motorcycle racing. What he has retained for his own use is between him and those people. We would all do: the same thing. The rest of us in the 250cc class need to get off ou r butts and work toward a better image for our class to the organization (the AMA ), the fans and to each other to promote our type of ra cing. Let' s not moan and kick dirt on the guy who has figured it out. I give Rich a lot of credit fo r the success of h is effort. He's running the team , no one else, and he d oes the work. Mo re power to yo u Rich, you're do ing it right. Dave Ray Huntington Beach, CA R!Iy is the accomplished mechanicfor Canadian 250cc Grand Prix racer Jon Cornwell...Editor. Missed the boat Aft er read ing the Ju ne 29th issue of Cycle News (Issu e #25), and after being a subscriber for over 20 years, I think 1 now kn ow how it feels to be discriminated agains t. In tha t issue you show what is supposed to be the top 25 d irt track rid ers in the Grand National Series, yet Rich King (#80) was not included. Rich has been in the top 20 almost every year for the last 10 yea rs, with a numb er of top-10 and top-five finishes. This w ould have look ed good in a resume for spons ors . I think that in the future if you are goin g to show pictu res and nice descriptions of the riders, you should be fair an d show the to p 25 as they are ranked by p oints in the AM A stand ings. Richard E. King Waterloo,IA Like the other racers of the Grand National Championship featured in the issue, Rich King was handeda questionnaire to fill out so that he would be included in our pro files. Unlike the other King failed to return his s, thus, he was not included...Editor. Lettrn to the rd itor & uld be sent to votees, Cycl e New .. ho P.O .
