ly hoping to regain the form he showed in '92 aboa rd a Gas-Gas, Bilbao is one of the spor t's true ambassad ors, grinning and chatting wi th fans. A t pres s ti me, the resu lts were un clear , as the 11th-pla ce ride r, Italy's Piero Sembenini, who was being minded by Oregonian Kary Kraha l, lodged a prot est against a five he felt he was un fairl y assessed when his boot leaned against a large bo ul der. The checker stood by h is claim that the movem en t w arra n ted a five, w hile Semben ini argued for a sin gle dab. The FIM ju ry wa s revi ewin g evidence, in cluding a video shot by a spectator. The outcome could be critical, as a favorabl e ruling would put Sembenini into the 10th spot with acc o m pa nying p oin ts, ahead o f Beta's Dou gie Lampkin, so n of forme r world champ Brit Martin Lampkin. Team Gas-Gas Interna tiona l Sal es Manager Andreu Cod ina, himself a former World contender, expressed no surp rise in the even tua l outcome. "We were confid ent, of course that Pons could ride with the top competitors. It was only a matter of time before Joan, like Marc Colomer, became equal to [ordi." When asked at the conclusion of Saturd ay' s event, w hen Pons and Tarres were tied With six points apiece, Codina r efused to make a prediction. "On a course such as this, anything is 'possible. The event can be won or lost in a single section with a single mistake. The grip afford ed by the rock slabs ma kes mistakes very big. A sm all mista ke so on becomes a big mista ke - so; no pred ictions...only that a Gas-Gas ri der will win!" While the final result of Tarres decimating the field was no su rp rise to the average, knowled geable trials fan, the big surprise was the second-place rider, Joan Pons. Long a popular rider in his homeland, Pons is the 1994 Eu ro pea n Champion. Cuttin g a s ma lle r figure ast ride his factory Gas-G as, Pons is a larger-than-life competitor, fully capable of a World Ch ampi on sh ip wi n. While the wily Tarres is now the eld er statesman of the sport, hot youn g newcomers like Angel Garcia, Gabri e l Re yes, Colomer, Narita and Lampkin are making life m iserable. Several vet erans of the sport like Miglio, Ah vala and Bosis mu st keep an eye out for these young upstarts. Several young American riders like Jess Kempkes and Matt Moore are ma king their presenc e felt on th e U.S. scene, though both have quite a ways to go to be in th e sa me cla ss as T arre s. With the emergence of new talent, many observ ers of the tria ls scen e ha ve ,pred ieted that this will be the year that Tarres is toppled. The now grizzled vet, however, is proving them wrong. This appears, indeed, to be the year of [o rd i Tarres...again! L"'\ For all advance tickets , subtract $5.00 from Gate Price and please indicate which tickets you want!
