Robb ie Horto n wa s the class of the Schoolboy
ra nks at the AMA Youth Regiona l Q ualifier a t
Mu dd y Creek Raceway.
Horton too k wins in both Schoolboy Stock
and Modi fied classes while Ricky Ca rmichael of
Florida notched the 85cc (14-15) Stock and Modified wins.
.
Horton's Schoolboy Mod ified performance
wa s flawl ess. ;He turned in three ea sy-l ooking
moto wins over Scotty Pinson, Christopher Bailey, Marcus Hedrick and Chris Anstead. Pinson
and Bailey traded off for second place in each
round, with Pinson coming out on top for second ov erall, and Bailey th ird, while Anstead's
consis ten t 5-4-5 finishes earned him fourth overall. Hedrick came home a creditable fourth in
round one, but a rough moto two followed in
which Hedrick crashed, limping home 19th. The
Su zuki rider then blazed to a sol id fourth in the
fin al moto, salvaging seventh overall. Da vid
Dishman, another Georgia rider, earned fifth
overall with 8-6-7 finishes.
The Schoolboy Stock class wa sn't q;,ite such a
picni c for Horton, who fell in the first round but
was able to climb back up to fourth. In the next
round, Horton was squeezed back to fifth while
Boruff jumped to the early le ad until Bailey
grabbed it away at the top of the first hill. Boruff 's
position in second lasted only a few moments -
then he crashed. Horton mov ed into fourth
behind Baile y, Hedrick and Dishman, passing
one rider, then the other, until he w as pressuring
Bailey for the lead. After riding defensively for
most of a lap, Bailey went a few inches wide in
the tow er sweeper, and that was all the opening
Horton needed to pa ss for the win.
Emboldened by his good run in th e seco nd
moto, Bailey pulled off the third-round holeshot
pursued by Horton, Boruff, Pinson, Dishman
and Hedrick. But like stock car driver Dale Earnhardt, Horton doesn't mind running second for a
while and was content to wait for an opening. It
cam e on lap two, with Horton pulling in front for
good to secure the moto and overa ll w in, leaving
Bailey to fend off Pinson, Boruff and Dishman.
