Smitty and trials
I wanted to add my voice to those in
favor of Team Smitty. It is the highlight
of each issue that it appears in. I also
want to thank you for the coverage of
observed trials, especially th e World
Rounds and the Scottish Six Days. Our
experience in Illinois shows that interest
in trials is growing, with 18 events
scheduled for this year - twice the number of a few years ago . Keep up the
good wo rk.

A regular schmuck
I just read you excellent interview with
Jeff Sta nton ("Last of a breed" - Issue
#22, June 8, 1994). I have nothing but the
utmost respect for Jeff and his many
accomplishments, especially the way he
has carried the U.S . in the MX des
Nations, when he has chosen to go.
. It is my opinion that Jeff's future in
motocross lies in hi s own hands. His
success depends not so much on
whether he is able to become a champion again, but on whether he is willing to
become a marketable, crowd-pleasing
person who is content with consistent,
top-five or top-10 finishes . Maybe Jeff
should spend a few weeks at the Guy _
Cooper ranch in an effort to remind
himself what motorcycles are all about
and learn a few PR pointers from the
master.
So in closing, Jeff, lose the funeral
parlor de meanor, at least act like you're
havin g fun (an occasional smile or
h u m orous re mark would be a good
start), and when things get bad remember that things could be wo rse; you
could be a regular schmuck with a regular schmuck job, like myself
