Engstrom masters Spring Creek Motocross By George Hodkinson Photo by Karen Hodkinson MIU.VILLE, MN, MAY 30 Rob Engstrom scored the win in the ultr a-eompetilive 250cc A class on Memorial Day at the Spring Creek MX facility. At Ihe sta rt of the first 250cc A moto, Lee Erick son fln d Jason Kempel were in front of Engstrom's Tousley Sports/Dad-backed Honda. Engstrom first deposed the Yamaha-mounted Kemp el on the fi rs t lap. On the next lap, Engstrom p iclccd off Erickson by sa iling over him on. one of the ju m ps, Once out front, Engstrom established a commanding lead that lasted 10 the finish. Kempel passed Erickson at the midpoint of the race, ~ a battle developed on the last lap between Erickson , Chris Bense and Heath Voss, which ended with the three riders still in that order at the finish. At the start of molo two Brandon Baclccs pu t his Yamaha out front, only 10go wid e in the second comer and get pinched out of the lead by Kempel and Engstrom. Kem p el was able to hold off Engstrom for the first three laps of the race, but then fell to Engstrom's mas tery of the notorious - sa nd wash'"' whoop section of the track on the fourth lap . Engstrom went on for another w in followed by Kempel in secon d, wi th Bense, Voss and Backes rounding out the top five. The 250cc C class had two d ivisions , and Mike Fox proved to be the most consistent rider in the first of those d ivisions . At the sta rt of moto one, Steve Milverstedt had the earl y lead followed by Bob Kerty, Perry WoUl, an d Fox. Milverstedt held a solid lead from start to ftnis h in the moto with Fox moving up to second, Tro y Johnson settling into third and Jerome Hagen rounding out the top ftve at the con clus ion of themoto. Mil ve rstedt was quick wi th the clutch in moto two, as welL and got the ea rly lead off the s ta rt, fo llow ed by Wolff and Fox. Afte r the whoop sectio n on the first lap, however, Milverstecl! slipped back to fourth as Fox took over the lead w ith Johnson moving inlo second . The threat of rain forced offtcials to reverse the order of the Tote Gray-p romoted short track w ith the Pro-Am and Expert ma ins hitt ing the high-banked Peoria Speedway befo re the Amateur portion. Mos t of the large crowd of specta tors stayed, the rain held off and the full program was run before 10 p.m.. Dale Jones took enough time off from working on Davey Camlin's bikes to win the Pro-Am ma in . Jones kept h is Bill ' s Cu stom Finish /Jody's Bar &: Grill /Dick Sexton Racingspo nsored Honda in front all th e way under continual pressure from second-place fin isher Steve Hall. Richard Th am es held down third over Chris Unks and Dean Faulkner. The Expert main rolled to the line with heat winner Dave Hebb on the pole flanked by fellow heat -winners Tommy Colson and Davey Camlin. Colson led into tum one , but it was Coolbeth ou t front at the end of the lap . The young rookie Coolbeth was gone as he set a blistering pace on his Gardner Racing /Waller Bros. H-D /R&:I Mfg./Bell/Spectro/Glen's Auto Body/House of Powder/Motion Pro /Wilcox MC /Hawg Wildsponsored Wood-Rotax. Colson struggled early before clo sin g on Coolbeth, but time ran ou t. Coolbeth took the win with Colson crossing the line in second place. Rich King made a big charge through the field to fmis h third, while CamIin led Hebb across the line to round out the top five. "It's way better than the last time I was here," said Coo\beth, referring to his 1992 trip to the hospital when he fell after winning his heat at the Amateur Nationals. Dickinson In the 600cc Superstreet class, Dave Francis opened a four-bike lead over Patriot after Todd Hoeft went int o 11 on lap two too hot, while leading. and was rewarded with a wall . By lap four Francis's lead was gone, with Parri ot out braking him and looking for a sho t at the lead all the wa y around the track. On the fifth lap, Parriot moved outside Francis in 11 and took ove r, qu ickly building a two-bike lead . Behi nd Francis, Ron Ch ia ra tti ba ttled half the race to p ut Billy Vassiliou solidly behind him. At the flag it was Parri c t, Francis and Chiara tti. Th e first-ever podium finish by a 600 in Formul a Pacific wen t to Parrio t, in third . Formula Pacific wasn't the only class where Rand o lf and Stanto n showed th eir sk ills . The ride rs wer e at home in both Open Superst reet and 750cc Supers treet. After the races, Patriot said he had spen t the en tire win ter preparin g bo th his bikes for a shot at both 600cc titles, as well as so me serio us AMA competition in the 600cc Superstreet class on the West Coast. JUNE I For the first time this season, Mother Nature gave the spectators nice weather with summertime temperatures. Rising to the occasion w ith some hot ra cing. Brent Werner took the Scratch main at Glen Helen Speedway. OwIie Venegas drew the pole for the Scratch main with Josh Lusen in slot two, Werner in three and Mike Faria in four . Venegas cut the best gate, while Lusen worlccd the out side. It tool< one lap for Lusen to grab the lead Venegas zigged wljen he should have zagged, dropping to fourth. and lArsen took over. Then the hand of fate stepped in on the whiteflag lap when Lusen got out of the groove and laid it down in tum one. Werner and Venegas were able to get by, but Faria. who had just been passed by Venegas, wasn't so lucky and also laid it d ow n. The w in w ent to Werner with Venegas second. Since no red flag had come ou ~ lArsen was credited with third and Faria fourth. From the 5(}-yard line Jim Estes turned on the heat and cut through traffic to taIcc over the lead on the fourth lap of the Handicap main. Bobby Campbell dropped to second and wa s unable 10 hold i~ with Brian Pappalardo, Venegas and Werner all getting by on the ftfth lap . Venegas and Werner were on a mission., and as the white flag came out th ey both found the chink in Pappalardo's armor and passed him. At the checkered it was Estes, Venegas, and Werner.
