team, had some soul searching to do. It
was at this hill that he broke his pelvis
last year . Castledine's attack was a rollon out of the start, and his Harley roared
as he poured it on. The climb was confined to the narrow path that had been
burned in by the 540s, and he fishtailed
up with a 10.6159. In round two, Castled ine h ad n o problems bringing the
Harley out of the box at maximum
power. Getting a little sideways, Castledine used body language to get straightened out. Shooting off the jumps, he
sta yed airborne and landed a good 50
feet off the last jump, blasting through
the timing lights with a 9.2499, which
brought the crowd to a roar.
Castledine's efforts provided him
with third place for the da y. "I took it
easy on my first ride," he said . " (On) my
second ride, I said, 'If I get this bott om
sec tion straight I can turn it on and I
think I can get a fast ride out of here: 1
w as one of th e lu cky ones that go t a
straig ht ho leshot. If it w ou ld n't ha ve
been for (teammate) Tom Reiser, I certainly would n't be anyw here com petitive. He puts me out here every week
after 1beat my bike up and 1beat myself
up. I'm just happy to compete with him
and be part of his team."
Gerencer started his day off on a bad
not e by throwing a chai n on his firs t
attempt at the hill. Returning later, Gerencer had only one shot to take care of
business. Exiting the starting box ha rd,
he quickly p ut the Harley- Davi dson
onto the straight and narrow. With his
feet on the pegs, Gerencer laid a straight .
line run to the top, deviating only once
coming off the third jump, and landing
about 55 feet up the hill to drift to the left
into some vegetation. He hammered the
throttle to the light with a fast time of
just 8.6536.
"The ride was really straight," said
'Gere n ce r . " I co uldn't believe how
stra ight it wen t; 1 was just along for the
ride. It started to d o a wheelie in th e
mi ddl e part of the hill like it did last
wee k; I had to get out of it a little bit.
As it sta rted to co me down I just
opened back up and went straight to
the top ."
Reiser brought his Harley to the base
of the hill and got a little twist out of the
bike when his clutch began slipping. He
regained control as he came off the first
jump, only to shut down as he rolled
over the second leap, coming to a rest at
the 280-foot mark. Reiser returned later
and launched hard from the far right,
then got kicked further to the right into a
grassy area. Reiser quickly worked his
Harley on to the hill's centerline as he
poured the nitro to the machine. He
s tayed centered and wheelied to the
third jump, clearing and landing a good
55 feet up the hilL He drifted a little left
to go through the lights with a time of
92400.
"It-was a wide-open run after we got
centered up after the first jump," said
Reiser.
