Riding with an arm injury, Karlsson only just made it, despite the fact that the . Kawasakis had an extra fuel cell under the seat. He had to push back to the paddock after running dry just after the finish. Everts had no such problems, with his smooth style winning the economy prize even at that pace! Trampas Parker had been prominent early on, bu t dropped back in the second half of the race. "I th ink 1 surprised myself, holding fourth for so long." he said. "1 started thinking about protecting the place and had brain fade. 1started to adopt the hard-track style again." Only because of the fuel dramas of his foes was Parker able to salvage 10th. MOT02 Everts was never endangered in race two , and was already looking around for th e rest by the end of lap one. The only one in sig h t was DeWit, b ut even th e ra ce-long seco nd-place man was half a minute down by half-distance. Bervoets an d Albertyn had gone down in turn one w ith Parker and Scevenels. Bervoets pulled back to third by haIfdis ta nce, and Albertyn, ri di ng wi th a replacement engine, was fourth. But wi th four laps to go, the champion went down again and had to haul in Kurt Nicoll for the second time. Mean while, Everts was going on his merry way, crossing the line just before the completion of 30 minutes. Thus the race was, effectiv ely, 30 min u tes p lus three laps - and so meo ne wa s going to run out of fuel. It was Albertyn, again! Just four corners from the finish his tank ran dry, and the title lead was handed back to Everts. Never before have such divi dends been paid by Everts' tactic to " keep racing ha rd so you don't lose concentration." DeWit, his second place secure, had noticea bly cooled down his style d uring the second half of the mo to, to ensure that he didn't run out of fuel. Parker had also battled well from the back. "1 didn't hav e time to relax my conce ntration that time," said Parker. "1 could have advanced further, but 1 had to drop my goggles in the second half after the roll-off mechanism broke." The tide has turned again in the "premier" GP motocross class, and the three title candidates -who have shared all 14 moto wins to da te - go to England separated by just 29 points. a SINCE mE UNl1ID srAn5 GRAND aax FJIOT CAME10 CAIlFORNIAS lAQJNA SB:A.RAawR/1N 1988, AMERICAN srcc RIDER) HAVE BfIN UNBEATAEllE.
