Seagroves scores first win at Glen Helen National MX By Scott Rousseau SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 5 o m Seagroves sped h is Bernie's Cycl e-backed 1973 Husqvarna 400CR to his first-ever National win by defeating all comers in the Specialty 30+ Novice class during round seven of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association/Vin tage Iron National MX Senes at the Glen Helen OHV. In the first moto of the Specialty 30+ No vice class, the Mesa, Arizona-based Seagroves grabbed the holeshot and led th e first lap, closel y pursued by CZmo unted Rick Diekmann and Dante Sorrenti, who wa s mounted on a 1974 Ma ico . As th e moto co ntin ue d, Seagroves pulled ou t to a greater advantage over Sorrenti, who in tum passed Diekmann and left the rest of the field be hind . At the finish, Seagroves took th e w in so me five second s ahead of Sorrenti. Frank Wadel ton finished third fo llow ed by Sam Durick and Diekmann. "I can't believe it. this th ing finally finished a race for me," Seagr oves said . In mo to tw o, Sorrenti was d etermined not to let Seagroves leave him behind on the starting line, an d when the field charged up the sta rt straigh t, Sorrenti held close to Seag ro ves. Th e field disappeared to the back portion of the course, and when they returne d to the fr ont, Sorrenti had succe ssfully passed Seagroves. The two ride rs continued to wage a classic battle, with Seagroves playing the part of Bengt Aberg to Sorrenti's Ake Jonsson. With less than three laps to go, they mad e serious contact - somethi ng th at rarely occurs in AHRMA Vintage Racing . Sorrenti got the worst of it, and was unceremoniously blown off the track and onto the adjacent start straight. With Sorrenti out of the way, Seagroves wa s able to crui se the last few laps for the moto and overall win. At the finish, Sorrenti could not hide his disa ppoin tment. "That guy (Seagroves) cut me off royally. He sure knew what he was doing," Sorrenti said. "Oh well , it was a good race anyway." . " Wh oeve r that guy was o n the Maico, he gave me a real good battle," T 1 WIMSALadies Motocross World Cup 994 Wood repeats at Motorcycle Raceway By Marv in Lewis Speclner OKLAHOMACITY, OK, MAY 29 espite hav ing to negotia te a muddy tr ack, Texan Dee Ann Wood successfully defended her World Cup titles in the 125 and 250cc classes at the 1994 Women's International Motorsport Association Lad ies MX Worl d Cup at Motorcycle Raceway. A lot was at stake on the day, with the event attracting 100 women racers from the Un it ed States and abroad . There were 12 classes including the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, where Wood would defend her titles against an international field of pros who were eager to take those titles away from her. . As th e gate d ropped on the fi rs t 250cc Pro moto, Wood broke away and gained the lead thro ugh th e w hoops before blasting over the double-do ubles and increasing her lea d even fu rther. Behind her, a battIe was shaping up for the number-two spot be tw een Americans Shelly Kann and Corina Ch inen . D '<:!' 0'1 0'1 .-i ~ Q) § -.. 36 American Michaela Go nzal ez was fourth , while French rid er Virgini e Ringebach ran in fifth but was gaining ground. Up front , Wood was un catchable, and she stormed to the firs t-m ote victory followed by Kann, Chinen, Gonzalez and Ringebach. In moto two , Kann took the lead as Wood suffered a bad .start and had to figh t her way through the pack. As the mo to wore on, Wood d isp layed her tenacity as she caught and passed Kann, who was refusing to give up the fight. In the end, Wood scored the win to successfu lly defend her 250cc World Cup title over Kann, wh o was followed by Chinen and Gonza lez. Track conditions improved for the first 125cc Pro moto, and Wood took full advantage by blasting out of the gate for the lead, with Kann once again in pursui t. As the fi el d sp read out, New Zealand's Shelley Hickman and Gonza-. lez gained. on the leaders as they battled among them selves. At the end of moto one, Wood had notch ed yet an o the r moto victory an d put herself in good condition to secure the 125cc championship. In mot o tw o, Gonza lez took the holeshot and led for over half the moto before Wood fired past to take the lead . Chinen pu t some pressure on the leaders early in the race before retiring with a blown head gasket. Wood continued her drive to take the win for her second cIass sweep of the day, and more importantly, her second-straight World Cup Seagroves sa id . "I dove in there and took the inside line, and we met . He should've just backed off." Despite concerns that he had ou tclassed himself, Suzuki Dealer Wayne Sumner, 61, was the fastest man in the Prem ier Op en Tw ins and 50+ Expert classes aboard his BSA-framed Triumph, going 1-1 for both victories. "I thought I'd made the mistake of moving myself up a class, Sumner said, " be cause when you're th is old eve ry spot on th e co u rse ca n be a tr ouble spot." a Results SPTSMN 125 NO V: I.
