Venegas comes home to Auburn Speedway gold By Gen Moore AUBURN, CA, MAY 27 Former No rthe rn California rider Charlie Venegas visited from Sou thern California and rode a spectacular race to cap ture top honors in the Scra tch ma in eve nt, while Ba rt Bast was declared th e winner in the accident- mar red Handicap ma in eve nt. On the pole for the Scratch main was Bobby ' Hedden , w it h Jim Sise more in ga te two; Bart Bast an d Venegas were in three and four. When the tapes went up, Hedden went into the comer first with Sisem ore alongside, but they touched wheels, causing bo th riders to go down. Venegas had to swerve to avo id hitting Sisemore, bu t d id man age to stay uprigh t. On the res ta rt, Venegas and Hedden dove in to the corner to gether, w ith Veneg as ge tting the bell er drive co ming ou t to take the lead . Sise more p ulled alongside Hed den at the start of lap two and passed him in the next comer. From that po int on, Venegas held onto the lead as Sisemore continu ed to push him to the limit; Bast and Hed. d en were still righ t there. It looked at times as if Hedde n might us e the outside line to pass all th ree, b ut he w asn't able to keep traction long enough to get the job do ne. At the nag it was Venegas wi th the wi n, followed by Sise more, Bast and Hedde n. . Vance Felicio led the Handicap main into the first comer follwed by Allen Krause , with Mike Kain a nd Bobby Hedde n side by side behind h im. Bast got undern eath Bobby Hicks to take fo u rt h p lace. As th ey crossed the line, Bas t caught Kain and Hedden and wheelied to pinch Kain off going into the next lap. Bast and Hed d en were still side by sid e, with Krause now leading Felicio. Krause we nt a bit wide, allowing Bast and Hed d en to get undern eath him. Bast then moved into second with Hedden in his hip By M. Sober Photo by Jim Thorn COSTA MESA. CA, MAY 27 Two-time U.S. National Speedway Champion Bobby Schwartz won h is third Scratch Mai n event of the '94 season at the tiny Costa Mesa Speedway oval, while Jos h Larsen turned in another fine performance in taking the Ha ndicap main. . Schwa rtz drew the third startin g grid in both h is Scratch hea t and semi-final, and when the . dra w came around for the main, he hoped his luck wo uld improve. It didn't; Schwartz drew ga te number five, the far outside sta rting lane ag ainst the crash wall. Drawing the po le was su rp rise main entry Don Odom, who won his Scra tch semi w ith a brilliant lane-four start. In lane two was Mike Faria; lan e three held Brad O xley, a nd Rob ert Pfetzing rou nded out the starters in lane four . Schwartz knew he had to make a grea t start tohave any chance to wln . and a great start is exactly wha t he pulled off. By the time the pack reached the first tum, Schwartz had positioned his jack Jarbo /Bell/ Ma rk Coker /Russell Racin g /H arl e y Davidson of Westminster /Cn Brace-supported Weslake lar enough ahead to pull down to the pole in fron t of the other riders. From there, Sch wa rtz wa s on his wa y to the checkered nag, leaving Oxley to d islodge Odom (who had gotten another good start) on the last lap to claim second. Faria also passed Odom, for third, and Pfetzing completed the finis hers . The re was on ly one ride r who mad e bo th mains on the night, and that was Faria. He started the Handicap final on the SO-yard line; from the 40 came Josh Larsen, Ed d ie Castr o and the p revious week's winner, Shawn McColUlcll. The 30-yard line held Andy North rup and Dou g Nicol, while Mark Hannah and Greg Ayers were on the 20. Ha nnah was the firs t to the fro nt, with Northrup a nd Ayers in tow. On la p two Ayers wa s moved aside by Larsen, who then went to work on No rthrup. La rsen dogged Northrup until la p six , w he n he mana ged to move ahead on the inside. Larsen's last obstacle was Hannah, and Larsen drove his Russell Racing /KG /Oakle y!Troy Lee Designs-sponsored Weslake pa st Ha nnah at the whi te nag on his way to the win . Faria followed Larsen through the pack to claim -second place. Castro was th ird and Northrup held onfor lourth.
