H .WiND....::· . . ·:1 ·· : Bad weather conditions played a role in the 500cc World Champ ion ship MX Series round in Sverepec, Slovenia, on June 5 as the top three riders in the point standings p ulled off the track in the second moto for fear of being injur ed. After three days of continuous rain, the track was nearly impassable, which prompted the mo ve by Swede Ma rcu s Hansson (Hon) and Belgian s Joel Smets (Ver) and Jacky Martens (H us) . In the first moto, Ita lia n Franco Rossi (Ho n) ha d won ahead of Brit Mervyn Antsie (Hon) and Hansson. Antsie won m oto tw o over Czech Miroslav Kucirek (Kaw) and Italian Giovanni Cavatorta (Ho n). An tsi e was the over all w in n e r, but Hansson still lead s the points chase over Smets and Mart ens. Co st a Mesa, California 's Bob Moore (Yam ) was the overa ll wi n ner at th e June 5 125cc MX GP in Hagabane ne , Sw eden . Frenchman Mickael Pichon (H on) w as seco nd , wi th H oll a n d ' s Pedro Tragter (Su z) th ird . Ita li an Alessio Chiodi (Ho n) and Dutchman Davey Strijbos (Suz ) ro unded out th e top five. Spaniard Jordi Tarres (G-G) cam e ou t on top o f the World Trials round in Nepomuk, Czechoslova kia, on June 4-5. Finn Tommi Ahvala (Fan) pl aced second overall, be sting Italian Donato Miglio (G-G) and Spaniards Diego Bosis (Bet) and Joan Pons (G-G). Spaniard Luis D' An tin (Hon) won the [arama, Spain, round of the Open Ducados Road Race Series on June 5. D'Antin beat Miguel Castilla (Yam ) and Juan Borja (Hon). Team Marlboro Rain ey's Jimmy Filice (Ya m) pulled out of th e rac e after onl y four lap s w ith a seiz ed engine. Filice wasn't the only hard-luck rider on the Kenn y Roberts /Wayne . Rain ey Marlboro-backed teams as both Jose Barresi and Manuel Gibemau also suffered en gine seizu res early in the race. The 125cc portion of the event was won by Jorge Martinez (Yam ) over Emilio Alzamora (Hon) and Antonio Sa n ch ez (Apr ). Americans Kurtis Robe rts (Yam) and T ommy Hayden (Yam) failed to complete the race, with Roberts crashing on the op ening lap while Ha yden only put one lap in the books. Paul Krause and Ted Hunnicutt (Kaw) combined efforts to w in the SCORE Baja 500 in B.C. Me xico, on June 3-4. The Krause/Hunnicu tt duo completed the 465.30-mile race in nine hours, 17 minutes and 16 se con ds, avera gi n g 50.098 mph. They finishe d ju st und er four minutes ahead of th e runner-up team of Larry Roe seler a n d Garth Swee tland (Kaw), who .crossed the finish line jus t und er tw o minutes ah ead of the third-place team of Davide TrolIi and Danny LaPorte (Kaw ). Japan 's Eizaburo Karasawa 0\ (Hon) earned th e Class 40 win, w hile ,...-l James Cloud and Cliff Matlock topped a new Dual Sport class on a '91 DR350 Suzuki. -g, 2 Kevi n Hines (CRE) won his home round of the AMA National Cha rnpionship Enduro Series, in Wrentham, Massachusetts, on June 5. Points leader Steve Hatch (Suz) was second ahea d of d efending champion Randy Hawkins (Suz) . Kelby Pepper (Kaw) was next, followed by local hot shot Monty Fairfax (Suz). Tom Norton (Kaw) capitalized w he n Fred Andrews crashed and d ropped out of th e se ve n th round of the G rand National Cr oss Country Ser ies in Laurelville, Ohio, June 5. Norton fin ished fourth, but it was enough to take over th e series points lead. The overall win went to none other than Scott Summers (Hon), w ho had supposedly broken his arm jus t tw o weeks ea rlier. Fin ishing secon d was Sc ott Plessinger (KTM ), wi th Duane Conner (Yam) third. Th e Form ula One race at th e Isle of Man TT on June 5 wa s won by Steve Hislop (Hon). The Isle of Man resident avera ged 119.54 mph to beat Northern Ireland's Phillip McCallen (Hon) and h is co u n try m a n Joey Dunl op (Hon). The top American fini sher wa s Craig McLean (H on) , who averaged 107.40 mph to finish 24th, one po sition ah ead of fell ow American Thomas Montano (Hon). The third American in the race, Wade Boyd, finished 34th. Canadian Linnley Clarke (Yam ) w on the third round of the 1994 Mot oplan Super Series in Shannonville , Ontario, Canada, on Ju n e 5. Clarke topped Benoit Pilon (Yam), with Michael Tay lor (Ka w) fini shing third . Taylor also won both the 600 and Open Sup erSport classes . Dirt tracker/road racer Larry Pegram has signed a contract with Erion Racing to contest the remaining rounds of the 1994 AMA/CCS HP4 600cc Supersport Series and also the EBC Brakes Unlimited Team Challenge endurance series. "We are really excited about having Larry on board," team owner Kev in Erion said. "He rode for us at Laguna Seca and took the Team Challenge victory . He is, w ithout a doubt, one of the most focused riders I have ever met and I know he w ill do a great job for us ." Pegram will continue to contest th e AMA Grand National Championship. " Rid ing for Erion Racing is a te rrific opportunity for me," Pegram said . "It will give me the chance to show what I can do on the pavement and I fully plan to bring home the Unlimited Team Chall enge Championship, as well as one or two wins in 600ccSupersport." The California Mini Motorcycle Club's annual two-day Mini Natio nal at Barona O a ks Raceway ha s been expanded to three days. Practice and racing will begin Friday, August 19 and run through th e rest of th e week end, with the trophy presentation tak in g pla ce on Sunday afternoon. Lake Perris Speedway has closed. The track, which has been Southern California speedway racing's Thursd ay night venue since Ascot's South Bay Stadium clo sed in 1991, ran it's final ev ent on June 2. "We' ve pulled the plug," sai d Promoter Brian Ch urch. "Financiall y, it wasn't paying for itself, and I cou ldn't afford to keep it going anymore. These (1994) crowds were the wo rst I've ever had." The speedway ma y, however, only be .closed temporarily, as hearsay has it that the track may be purchased b y a new promoter. Canadiart figure skater Elvis Stojko (shown here being interviewed by race announcer Larry Maiers) was on hand to check out the racing. Stojko earned a silver medal in the Winter Olymp ics in Lillehamm er, Norway, and has ridden dirt bikes for approximately 10 years. "I love motocross," said Stojko, the owner of a 1994 Yamaha YZ250. Antique motorcycle fans should make plans to attend the board track racing mot orcycle exhibit at the Santa Paula Union Oil Museum, 1001 E. Main St., in Santa Paula, California. Several board track machines, in cl u d in g Ind ian, Cyclone, Harley-Davidson and Excelsior marques, are on d isplay with o ther motorcycles and memorabilia from the era . The exhibit has been running since April 1, and will close on June 26. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. According to a press release from West Coast British Racing's Mic hael Green, he and his sponsor J.H. Davis have parted ways. Green is the current championship points leader in the 1994 AHRMA Sou nd of Singles Junior and Historic Cup 250ccGP Series. The Sierra Na tional Forest, located east of Fresno in central California, is in the process of developing a new Off-Highway Vehicle management plan . The forest hosts two AMA D-37 dual sport rides and is home to the popular Miami Mountain motorcycle trails and other off-highway routes. Two public meetings are scheduled to be held at the Veterans Me morial Building, 5th and Hughes Streets, in Clovis, California on June 15 (10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p .m.) at w hich motorcyclists can voice t heir opinions as to what they would like included in the new plan. According to team owner Rob Iannucci, Team Obsolete has abandoned its plans to race a pair of MV Agusta triples in the 1994 Classic Manx on the Isle o f Man. "We are still rebuilding our MVs, and the Honda six has taken more time 'than expected," Iannucci said . "We have a very full plate right now." The MVs and the Honda six-eylinder will appear at AHRMA 's Road Atlanta Na tional on July 16-17. AGV Sports has signed on as the prima ry spons or of the remaining three events of the AMA 125cc GP exhib ition road race series, beginning wi th the Road America event on June 12. AGV will pay contingency awards for rid ers wea ring its helmets and a championship bonus of $1000 will be paid based on the points from the last three events.
