Lynne Bjornstrom Oxnard, CA ESPN began its coverage.of the 1994 World Championship Road Race Series rounds on Friday, June 3 with the Au stralian round. The Malaysian round of the series is scheduled to air on June 17 at 10:00 p.m (Pacific time). As far as the numbers go, they are based on the finishing order of the previous season. In a case such as Cadalora's, number seven was left vacant when Juan Garriga, who f inished seventh in the 1992 SOOcc World Championship, retired...Editor. Want ing them now I wa s hoping that perhaps one of you r sub scrib ers could clear up a nagging p roblem that I, and many motorcyclists, have... What w ould it tak e to ha ve American racing enthus iasts trea ted like firs tclass ci tize ns - as is the case with th e res t of the world? I' m talking about coverage of Gra n d Prix, World Superbike and AMA races. While Americans have do mi nated for yea rs, the American TV view er gets to see a canned version of the race weeks, sometimes m on th s, later. Can anyon e exp lain why Europe, Aus t ralia, Ja pa n a n d ce r ta in So u th Am erican co u ntries can see same-day covera ge via satellite hook-up an d we can' t? I have contact ed personn el at the sa tellite tra ns mi ssion center for Doma in Barcelona, Spain, and kn ow for a fact th at the re is same-day satellite transmis sion to these countries . Wh y not us? After last year' s live U.S. GP cove rage on Prime Network , a Mr. Murphy from First Auto Sports wrote a letter to Cycle News explaining that his com pany had handled the coverage and asked how w e enjoy ed it, and, d id we want more? Many racing enthus ia sts w ere quick to respond, taking the time and effort to write Mr. Murphy. I late r contacted First Au to Spo rts and asked them if there was a favora ble response. I was told there was an excelle n t res pons e. And yet, as of June 1, Am eri cans ha ve not ev en seen the first GP from Austr alia - not even in the a n ti -clima tic taped version . Why not? Let's get working for be tte r coverage. Richard Barnes Lake Helen, FL Dirt biking's loss The dirt biking community recently lost a great man. Although my father, Dick My ers, was killed while driving his dune buggy in Lone Pine, California, he was truly a dirt biker at heart. Although he was never fa mous in th e world of motorcycle racing, he did touc h upon a few of some of the more famous racers' li ves - from racing against Kenny Roberts at Lodi, to being passed by the likes of Mark Brelsford, Torsten Hallman and Malcolm Smith in many of the races he en tered in Northern and Southern California. Most recently, he spent most of h is free time travelling w ith m y mother and trail- rid ing with h is motorcycle club, T.T./MC, out of Lake Isabella. Dad was on the gas in a dune buggy when hi s numbe r came up, but I guarantee that he is on a dirt bike wi th the number on e plate somewhere on a trail in the wild blue yonder. Godspeed, Dad. We' ll all miss yo u. Bob Myers Rio Rancho, NM of the call will provid e a means for new contributi ons to be ma de in your behalf (based on vote count). Call 900/329-0645, ex te nsio n 103. Mike Rehler - SurveyUne '94 Santa Monica, CA Bowli ng bikes Gee, just as I was a bou t to co m p la in ab out the Du ca tis enjoyin g an unfair ad vantage in th e AMA Superbike arena...Just when"I was going to ask why the AMA didn't even consider how much the Ducati weighed before they raised its minimum weight at the end of last year...Just when I was about to blast the Westerville mob for sitting on their behinds while their premier class turned into a ted ious procession - they go and raise the minimum Twins weight to 355 pounds, on an even scale with the fours. Good id ea . Now if only th ey ' d append the rule so the 20 pounds added to the Ducati had to be in the for m of bar-end weights - say a regulation bowling ball on each side - then we'd ha ve some racing. I'll bet the AMA would find this increas es th e ir N eilsen ratings even more than running races in converted parking garages and abandoned minesh afts; perhaps even more than oiling down the track and parking a pace car on the trajectory line outside the tum. But seriously, try to ima gine how fast th os e s upe rbike r u les w o u ld ha v e chan ged if it had been Harley-Davidson w ho was ca mpa ig n ing a n unde rd og fou r-cy linder, and it was the Japanese who we re invincible on their Twins .
