and jump ahead of the pack, hoping that their gamble would payoff as the others rushed to make up the time wasted while waiting in line. Such notables who chose . to burden themselves with an early five, rather than be stuck in the mobile gridlock that is caused by riders balancing in the sections included Pons, Bosis, Miglio and . Bilbao. As the renegades took off, it was Tarres who turned in another amazing loop, this time with a mere four points. Colomer was second best on lap two, dropping only 10 points after crashing in section one. This left him in a tie with Narita, as . both riders had 15. The only top rider whose score went up drastically was Garcia. The Spaniard watched his score grow t o 21, while hi s rivals man aged to improve their marks. At th e end of lap two, the overall scores were: Tarres 12; Nari ta 34; Colomer 34; Garcia 36; Miglio 38; Colley .40; Pons 41; Ahvala 45. As the final lap began, it became clear tha t Tarres wo uld not allow victory to slip through his grasp. His final score even included two time-penalty points, and removing those points really shows how brutal his victory was. Tarres dropped only seven points on the final lap, and was the uncontested winner. The real battle was behind Tarres, as there were many riders who battled for the remaining two spots on the podium. It was Garcia who turned in the second-best last-lap score, and was rewarded with second overall. Narita was third, even though he was bested by six other riders on the final lap. Pons was fourth, just as he had been in Ireland and England, with an excellent last-lap score of nine. Meanwhile, Colomer, who is considered to be the natural successor to Tarres, carded a final lap of 16 and dropped to fifth. This was the first time in the young season that Colomer failed to make the podium. Bilbao appears to be regaining his old form, and there was much joy in the Montesa camp, which has been working very hard to return to their place amongst the best. Of special interest were the first championship poin ts scored by young Spaniards Jose A Benitez and 16-year-old Marcel Justribo . It was a rough day for the Brits; Colley was the best in eighth, while new sensation Dougie Lampkin finished 12th and dropped two places in the point standings. Ahvala was 13th on the day, and nobody really knew what went wrong for the former champ. Nevertheless, he lost only one spot in the championship point standings. '1 was not expecting this. This is very bad for me, but we have some rounds to go, and maybe I can get some points in Czechoslovakia in two weeks," said Ahvala. ~ German Wor1d Round Osnabruck, Garma ny Results: May 22-23 CHAMPIONSHIP: 1.
